I tend to keep my theories to myself, but I need to put this out there. So we don't know the identity of the kidnapper, but let's pretend they're N, and that they're fully aware of M's feelings for the MC. Not killing the MC because they're precious to M, but kidnapping them in hopes that M will forget about them. Consoling and supporting them, whilst also basking in their pain... I bet the MC escaped only because the kidnapper let them escape. Oh, is my tinfoil hat showing?!

Long answer:
So basically I started this out with an idea for a dnd campaign. I made a world, made characters and it was set in the regency era.
The campaign was pretty heavily inspired by the many If novels that I had read and I wanted to play something semi-lighthearted (but I do have a tendency of destroying my players...).
As I developed the world I came up with 'love interests' for the setting and the school. There are 9 love interests in the campaign!
Buuut then a tiny little voice in my head thought... 'you know what would be cool? if this was an actual game' especially because I've been dealing with DM burnout. And I'm realizing I generally have a bit more fun when I have more control, so writing an IF game somehow logically feels like the perfect solution to it.
Zane is the only character from the campaign who I haven't altered too much or merged two character concepts together. I did have to puzzle a bit when I decided to have this game in a modern setting and not the regency era.
And I also had to change him enough to fit the narrative of there only being one main character instead of 5.
Zane honestly came to me pretty quickly! I've always loved the rough on the outside but soft and gooey on the inside characters and I feel that Zane fits that fairly well. But they've also grown a lot the more asks I answer about them, and that makes me love them even more.
In fact, I have the old drawing I did of all the characters here somewhere... let me know if you wanna see! (They're the draft ideas of what they'd look like for the dnd campaign)

Hi Olive! I was so excited when I saw this since I'm very passionate about Norse culture and history. I'm glad to hear you want to keep it as historically accurate as possible, with some (very much needed) exceptions. I want to ask, did you have some other inspiration aside from the series Vikings?
Inspiration to create MH? Hmm, it sounds a little corny or cliché, but I've been interested in Viking culture since I was a kid - it's a culture and age that has kept my fascination the most except for maybe the Minoans.
I don't know... I love history. After finishing an episode of "The History of Vikings" podcast, I wondered if any IFs were in the works. I saw an empty space and thought why not :)
