Our sublime collaboration of the day involves celebrated Seattle artist Mike Hadreas, better known as Perfume Genius, and acclaimed Los Angeles R&B/pop musician Lorely Rodriguez, aka Empress Of. The two brilliant talents unite on a phenomenal cover of Empress Of’s When I’m With Him. The original can be found on Empress Of’s album Us. It gets a total reinvention on this synth shimmering rendition as they collaborate with producer Jim-E Stack to recreate When I’m With Him as a synthpop slow waltz. A foggy, misty retro 90s aura blankets the song, in a way much reminiscent of Blood Orange. Perfume Genius and Empress Of are stunning to say the least as their voices intertwine immaculately on the warm nostalgic love song. Since 2013, Lorely Rodriguez has been weaving together intricate electronic pop under the name Empress Of. Her first singles suggested a certain spun-sugar quality. However, her debut album, Me, with its slinky R&B slow jams, pop hooks, and spacey disco synths, showcased Rodriguez as a singer and producer capable of working in nearly every shade of the sonic rainbow, while still skirting metaphoric descriptions. (For the most part, Rodriguez doesn’t go in for flowery language. I try and fail at a description. She laughs when I call her lyrics “linguistic ambidextrous,” telling me, “That’s a fancy way of saying bilingual!”)
