Long ago, before the Gods were born, there was only the Abyss. Through the chaos of the Abyss, a People spawned. They called themselves, the Architects.
The Architects were a genius people, but the Abyss is never safe. The Abyss clawed at their souls, corrupting their very blood. Their very people were dying from a Sickness, and were soon facing extinction. The Architects tried to cure the Sickness, but ended up doing harm to their own. The Architects soon realized that the only way for their race to survive was to leave the Abyss.
An ever-ambitious people, the Architects went straight to work with this goal in mind. They crafted alternative planes of existence, learning what worked and what did not, and discovered the universe in a way the chaos of the Abyss denied. But as time went on, more of the Architects fell to the Sickness. It was more and more important to escape the Abyss as the people began to panic.
At long last, the Architects had nearly completed Xyn'txs, the gateway between the Planes. Finally, the people would be free from despair! The project team was performing the final checks and tests on Xyn'txs before announcing its completion. The team opened the gate to Xyn'txs, and ten engineers and scientists entered. The gate then closed.
Three hours passed in their laboratory, as everyone waited in anticipation. They have performed these checks hundreds of times, and now all their hard work was about to pay off. They had unending worlds to explore, an infinite number of discoveries to make, and all the time they needed. And all they had to do was wait seven more hours for the inspection crew to return.
But then the gate to Xyn'txs opened, and a lone scientist stumbled through. The scientist was deteriorated and malformed, screaming gibberish into the faces of all that were present before taking their own life.
Xyn'txs had destabilized. Years of hard work were lying in ruin. And in the distance, the Architects could see the Beasts. One of these Beasts took notice of the open gate and started shambling back towards the Abyss. The Architects attempted an emergency closure of the gate to Xyn'txs, but it was too late. Black blood stained the walls as the Beasts slaughtered their former comrades.
“We have lost much to-day, but I assure you hope is not lost, for there will be life in the home of our Lornlord! They shall be our key! No matter the cost, no matter how much we must work, we will escape the Abyss.”
