Is there a functional difference between "loses defender" and "can attack as though it didn't have defender"?
If a creature loses defender, then it no longer has defender and won’t benefit from anything that looks for creatures with defender, such as Vent Sentinel or Overgrown Battlement.
A creature that can attack as though it didn’t have defender still has defender, but it can attack as though it didn’t while still benefitting from all of the things I mentioned above.
