So I just finished watching(rewatching? More on that in a sec) The Lost Room (2006) today, and I definitely have some thoughts, so in no real cohesive order here they are;
-for those unfamiliar, Lost Room was a miniseries on Sci Fi Channel that followed detective Joe Miller as he attempts to get his daughter back after getting mixed up in a world of random objects with weird powers and the various cabals that seek to control them. It ran for 6 45 minute episodes.
-this miniseries is almost a 10/10 for me on personal taste, and where it falters really comes down to somethings you could see going on behind the scenes if you know whats up.
-the what's going on I'm talking about is that the miniseries was clearly meant to be the pilot for a full series, but that never came to fruition. And while the miniseries does tell a complete story on its own, you can definitely see the fingerprints of the much larger plan on the mirror.
-For me personally, I think it's just the right kind of weird esoteric thriller that really captivates me anymore.
-and I think I watched it when it aired, but it did not stick with me back then. 13 year old me was apparently not as receptive to the show as 30 year old me is.
-this show feels like an Unknown Armies campaign sanitized for network television. The cabals, weird powers, plays at godhood, and people's lives being messed by it all feel very in line with UA. Another thing in the show that feels very UA is the implications and ramifications of violence in the show, but that would take a whole thesis to break down.
-on the other side of inspiration, I can definitely see this shows DNA in Remedies supernatural thriller games, Alan Wake and Control, especially the latter with the Objects of Power and Mid-century aesthetic.
All in all I have to say, give Lost Room a watch. It's currently free with ads on YouTube.
