Besides the recorded laugh tracks that are flat out used to tell you when to laugh, as far as I know (feel free to correct me) even in recordings with live audience it is possibly to ask the people there for specific reactions that they edit into the show later. in the end of the whose live tapings they definitely asked the audience to do gasps and stuff like that. but that may have a lot to do with the way whose line is shot.

99% Invisible recently did a podcast about the history of the laugh track (called "The Laff Box") that tries to answer that question.

And what also bugs me in laugh track sitcoms is when the audience goes “oooooooh!!” When 2 characters kiss, I hate that! It’s so annoying!

I think the laugh track is a cheap way for the show to say “insert laugh here” even if you didn’t think it was funny. It’s why I can’t stand those kinds of sitcoms anymore.

Thanks guys! Sorry, I should have said that they are live audiences that I’m talking about, but like Sirius said - perhaps they react as requested? It’s still weird as hell.

me! my friends and i couldn't stop talking about serial / undisclosed when they aired.

I’m kinda obsessed with it rn. My friend just told me about undisclosed maybe a week ago? I can’t believe he was convicted with such horseshit “evidence”. Like after Serial, I thought that there was maybe a small chance he did it but that it certainly wasn’t beyond reasonable doubt, but now I have no doubts that he’s innocent. It’s seriously messed up.

i’m doing one of the minack theatre in cornwall which is resulting in a lot of swearing but i guess that doesn’t count

i did see a pattern for a hedgehog with ‘prick’ written underneath it and i think that will be my next project

That’s interesting - secondary school here (the equivalent) finishes at 4
