In her article on the creativity bias, writer Amanda Enayati referrences Jennifer Mueller, psychologist and Wharton management professor, Beau Lotto of LottoLab in London and others to suggest a cultural bias against creativity. She contends that although we herald creativity in theory, in practice we often reject creative ideas and in favor of practical options. This is especially the case in times of uncertainty and difficulty. "It's exactly during those times, perhaps when we need it most, that we are least likely to embrace creativity," she writes. I found particularly interesting the idea of a "creativity versus practicality dissonance" and how it relates to the way we structure our lives and activities, with practical and creative endeavors leading largely separate existences, to paraphrase.
