Lovely anecdotes by Jan Welles, who was managed by Lou Perry at the same time as Dean Martin and Sonny King, complete with another story of Martin and Lewis getting together! It’s not totally clear exactly what date she’s talking about here, but from the context it’s definitely before March 1945, as later she mentions having left Lou’s management by then.

"I can get a new chainsaw." - Lou Perry(man) as Loyd (pictured right) in Eagle Pennell’s The Whole Shootin’ Match (1978). Perry had worked on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and would play L.G. in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), both directed by fellow Austinite Tobe Hooper.

meet the world’s angriest girl, louanne perry, who will only ever go by lou. or louie. just not louanne okay she’s seen king of the hill and she hates the connotations. especially because she lives in a trailer. anyway, lou grew up in iowa, moving from there through wyoming, colorado, utah, idaho, washington, and, finally, oregon, as her parents found and lost jobs or were moved through various prisons. because they were drug addicts, with it enough to cook and deal a little bit of meth and mostly stay out of trouble, out of it enough to barely feed their kids and lose them to social services within a few months of a new move. but lou and her little sister were always given back, her mom, usually, cleaning herself up enough to convince the authorities she’d changed but forgetting that five minutes after actually making it home.

when lou turned eighteen, she told her parents they could keep their welfare check, keep whatever benefits were coming to them by claiming her little sister, as long as they let her take the kid and leave, never to talk to their parents again. they agreed, happily, and lou and her sister skipped town. they moved around a bit, lou trying to figure out how to get her sister an education without some important paperwork, and how to get herself a job, before they ended up on rye. lou works at the popsio bottling plant as well serving at a clubhouse connected to a salvage yard. they’re poor and shit’s hard, but she’s mostly able to pay her bills, and she even let herself have a cat. she’s settling in, she swears.

except she’s still pissed, all the time, and basically refuses to make friends and hates her little sister’s boyfriend and won’t even try to get a girlfriend of her own and essentially emotionally stagnated at eighteen, no big deal. lou has a lot of work to do to figure out how to actually live and not just survive.
