Joy Division - Disorder

Contrary to popular opinion, which favors Love Will Tear Us Apart as the best JD song, this has always been my absolute favorite.

My husband and I call this kind of tune a 'flip out song', which was the kind of sound that actually defined Gen X alternative music. It still makes me euphoric, flip out and jump. I don't think I will ever get over my teenage self and I hope this sound comes back. There is something eternally youthful about it.

Other flip out songs I love: Crystal by New Order, Mote by Sonic Youth, The 15th by Wire, Boys Don't Cry by The Cure, 2+2=5 by Radiohead, Hey by Pixies, In Bloom by Nirvana, Hey Joe by Jimmy Hendrix, Don't Stand So Close To Me by The Police, In The Meantime by Spacehog, Today by Smashing Pumpkins, Song 2 by Blur, Wolf Like Me by TV On The Radio, Major Tom by Peter Schilling and I could make an endless playlist with them.

Ah, The Pixies. A perfect band, influencing many great bands of the 90s, principally Nirvana, with their loud-quiet-loud trademark sound. Frank Black / Black Francis is a strange and genius songwriter. Two albums feature on this #top500albums list. Doolittle is the better album (and did better commercially). But Surfer Rosa will always be my favorite.

227. Pixies, Doolittle ***** “Hey” might be the favorite song of a whole generation of late X misfits. Like me.

317. Pixies, Surfer Rosa **** I dated someone and somehow “Cactus” became our song. You know, because wiping your bloody hand on your dress and sending it to someone is so romantic. God, relationships are so embarrassing when you don’t know how to do them. I spent a lot of time in my room learning Spanish that is not at all useful in the world.
