Hiccup says goodbye to Toothless while standing on one leg.

He pushes his support away.

Hiccup stands before his people, before his best friend as he leaves. Toothless's last image of his beloved human is of him standing erect, balancing without help from anything artificial. Toothless sees that Hiccup is going to be okay. He wouldn’t leave if he thought Hiccup couldn’t handle it. He can handle it.

Hiccup needed to learn in this movie that he was complete without Toothless. This film on it's own may not have projected that arc as well as it could have, but this metaphor is utter perfection.

In shredded armor, with torn wings, decimated home, eternally landlocked, a broken heart and a lost leg; Hiccup, with smiling tears, stands.

Hiccup is complete.
