An: This was just- it was supposed to be a little warmup drabble but then I made it into this- so... enjoy! No beta we die like cowards. Tags: Slow Burn, Emotions are hard to express, Falling hard but not knowing what to do, slight suggestiveness, SFW Title: Peaches and Cream
It had been a long night of driving with his twin, and dammit if he didn’t get away from his sibling for another second he would’ve maimed him. The little place they drove in was full of everyone knowing each other and being everything a little shithole like it should be. Something buzzed in his chest of melancholy, that was easy enough to stub with his heel like the cigarette on the ground. The sky flickered as a few seconds later a clap could be heard, as if the sky could feel his emotions it poured. Swearing to himself as he just pushed through whatever little store was closest to hide from the rain, even if he was wearing a hoodie he hated the feeling of the moistness.
The jingling above the door made his ears ring, groaning at the sudden ringing in his ears he didn’t hear the quick steps behind the counter.
“Hi, welcome to Crumble and Flake, how are you doing today?” The voice was soft but he heard it over the music playing through the speakers in the corners of the room. Looking up he saw the person the voice belonged to, his younger self would have blushed like a child at their appearance. The flour on their cheeks, hair slightly messy, but their eyes held such innocence. He didn’t need to notice that they were attractive, he wasn’t going to be here for long. In and out. Just like it's always been. No need to get attached to anyone but Atsumu.
Stealing his emotions, pulling his hood down as he stepped towards the counter, looming over the person who gulped and tried to hide their fear. It wasn’t a big deal, he was used to the fear of his appearance, he shouldn't care. Yet there was that budding feeling of pain. Clearing his throat his eyes moved from their small frame to look at the daily specials, subconsciously biting his lip while squinting at the menu.
“Yeah, I’ll take an Iced Espresso… Please.” taking his wallet from his front pocket as he held out his card with two fingers. Looking back at their face, eyes flitting down to their name tag and gave a slight grin, “Yn.” They gave him a wide-eyed look, the apples of their cheeks darkening. Letting out a small, ‘alrighty’ as the flustered barista snatched his card from his fingers. Sliding it quickly through the card reader and spun it around trying to put the card in between his fingers again but fumbling slightly. He let out a breathy chuckle before punching in the bigger tip and signing it, spinning the card reader towards them, unable to help the sly look on his face.
“Is- uhm… Is this for here or to-go?” They were trying so hard to compose themselves, that he almost felt bad, almost. Turning to the cat clock on the wall with a slight hum tilting his head, already knowing his answer but he wanted to play with this barista a little more.
“Well, I guess I can stay here for a while. Wait out the rain and all.” Pivoting back towards YN with a closed-eye smile. They quickly nodded and hurried to prepare his drink, exhaling as he turned around to get a closer look at the small cafe that held a homey vibe. Of the various plants that either sat or hung by the windows, he knew one plant, the pothos that had been hung over the wall to the east of the shop.
Stepping towards the plant, tilting his head at the leaves while running a hand through the hanging leaves. With a lip shrug, he nodded, shoving his hands in his hoodie, licking his lips, and surveying the room. He could sit at the booths or tables closer to the chilly rain, opting to sit at the empty bar pulling to the middle stool with a grunt. The seat was plushy and not at all what he was used to, normally cafe stools had this plastic faux comfort to them, but this- this was like sitting on a cloud. Folding his hands in front of him as he watched YN dance around as they added ice to the coffee with the precision he’s rarely seen in his brother when he prepares anything food related.
“Here you go, enjoy.” When YN came to him with his drink he almost felt his heart in his mouth, delivering his drink like an angel saving a wounded warrior amidst the battlefield. His lips curled up giving them a smile, though it only reached to his cheeks. He got good at fake politeness, but it looked like Yn did the same. Their eyes didn’t match the tight smile that they gave him. Part of him wanted to ask what's wrong, the other part of him said don’t, it’s already dangerous for him to mingle with a civilian. Nodding a thank you as he unlaced his fingers sipping at the cold drink in his hands, giving an audible sigh of relief as his eyes fluttered shut. Despite the cold drink, it made his body warm, there was a soft giggle slightly to the left of him. Cracking one of his eyes open to see Yn trying to cover their smile at his reaction.
“Is it that good?” they asked, tilting their head to the side with a lopsided grin. Taking another sip and letting a louder sigh of relief, nodding his head while looking through his eyelashes at them. Holding his drink to his chest with a smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes.
“Very, the fact that this one was made with the filter on. It’s already a winner in my book, darl’.” He wasn’t expecting a scoff but it was just as pleasant as their laugh, something he didn’t expect to find.
“Oh please, it's just espresso with some ice. Nothing too extravagant.” They rolled their eyes, but the faint hue returned to the apples of their cheeks again, something that he was satisfied by. Tsking before taking a gulp of the drink looking at the drink in his hand to return back to the barista and shrugging.
“But it was made by you. That’s what makes it better.” With a soft smile he watched them get into a frantic flustered state, it took him a moment to realize what he had just proclaimed. His face matched the flushed look they had, setting the drink down to wave his arms and try to take his words back.
“I- I mean it’s a lot better than my shitty twin can make! That- That’s what I meant!” His hands felt clammy, wiping one hand on his thighs while scratching the back of his head. He turned away from them trying to calm his rapid heartbeat, clearing his throat as he nervously peaked over his shoulder to see their back while their shoulders shook. Did he offend them? Oh no- that was worse than almost complimenting them! Almost falling off of the pillowy stool he was sitting on, his foot slid under him and his hands flew to the bar. Then he heard it, the telltale sounds of bubbling laughter. They barked and howled while shaking their head. He could tell that he had made a fool of himself but it wasn’t laughter out of malice- no it- was different. It was as if he had just told them the most hysterical joke and their response was one like a hyena. His chest shook as he started to laugh with them, letting himself laugh. What a strange concept now. Who would expect him to be laughing at his own foolishness?
“You- You are fucking hilarious dude.” Yn was still hiccuping in laughter but they were able to control their laughter a bit better. “I haven’t laughed that hard in weeks. Thank you, Sir-”
“Osamu.” He cut them off, for his own sake, he detested the word, Sir.
“Thank you, Osamu.” He wasn’t ready for the way their eyes showed true merit. The fact that their face showed a true genuine look, was directed to him. The alien sight that was before him, maybe they were an angel sent from heaven. The looks he received from strangers were ones of the complete opposite; disdain, hatred, fearful to name a few. Never genuine. Ripping himself from them as he stared at his hands and the coffee, trying to cover the feelings that had been dug up with an excavator. He let his mouth smile, since he couldn’t truly just go deadfaced in front of them. He could but- he didn’t want to. Letting himself have this small emotion, just once before he knew he had to hide it over with concrete again. Letting himself feel things for the moment he was in.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking,” They started, walking to be in front of him, leaning on the bar with their hand holding their chin. “How long are you gonna be in town?”
Ah, there it is- he should just say he’s passing by, ‘oh I’m just taking a rest here and moving on far far away-’
“Probably…Fer a few months.” Shit. YN’s brows lifted, they tried to give a fake cough to cover their surprise, it was endearing. He thought he could get lost in their eyes, curiosity, wonder, and a tinge of excitement swirled behind them. “My brother wanted to just pass on by, but we’ve kinda been on the long haul for a while.” Liar, if Atsumu was here he’d be screaming the opposite, calling him a hypocrite.
Which is what he was at the moment, and it's a fair statement.
Yn didn’t look convinced though “Your…Brother? Are you sure he’s real?” The slight lilt of playfulness made him want to scream with laughter.
“Twin.”
“Twin?” Their voice held a bit of shock as did their face, it read “there's two of you?”
“Unfortunately. Though he’d say th’ same about me.” They gave a huff of laughter before shaking their head.
“I guess you two don’t get along then?” Why was it so easy to talk to this barista in this random shithole of a town? He felt like he was going mad, was up down and down up? What was happening to him?
“Sometimes, but he’s all I got…” Looking away from their gaze as he felt his heart get heavier than before. Biting the inside of his lip as he took another drink of the coffee, letting his fingers become numb like the mug in his hands.
“I’m… I’m sorry for prying, it’s not my place–” Lifting his hand to cease their rambling, exhaling through his nose while setting the mug back on the bar. His tense shoulders sagged after a moment.
“It’s a’ight. Ya’ didn’t know, didn’t do nothin’ wrong, darl’.” The silence overlapped them, nothing but the slight ticking of the clock on the wall, and the radio softly playing over the heavy air. The rain must’ve stopped, he wasn’t aware it did, his attention was elsewhere.
Yn made themselves busy by wandering away, but always in eyesight to him. Chugging the last of his coffee, sucking on the ice in his mouth. Letting his teeth crunch over the cold cubes that were diluted with the taste of the espresso. Standing from the stool as he ducked his head from hitting a plant he must’ve missed when he first sat down.
“See ya’ around Yn. Ya’ have a good day a’ight?” He waited for them to be looking at him letting his hand wave at them. Yn held a broom in their hands, shyly waving at him with a hopeful gleam in their eyes.
“Alright, have a good- Oh! Wait before you leave!” They couldn’t drop the broom fast enough, as they sped to the register, trying to pry a piece of paper that was tight in a box. Walking out from the counter to hand him a little paper with ten punches.
“If you come by again and get this punched, after the tenth one you can get a free drink!” He’d give it to them, a bold move of forgetting this until he was leaving. Taking the paper from their hands, staring at it for a moment before putting the paper in his wallet.
“I’ll make sure to come back then. Oh, when I do- are ya’ gon’ have flour on yer face again or should I jus’ expect that’s a normal fer ya?” With a snarky grin he watched their face pale before flushing. Not expecting the puffed up pout they gave him, barking out a laughter at their frustration.
“Give me the paper back then if you're gonna be an ass then.” They held out a hand with the cutest glare. He wanted to just squish their cheeks and have them look up at him with big pleading eyes.
Shifting his feet, bending over plucking a pen from one of their pockets near their hips. Keeping his eyes on theirs while taking the cap off of the pen with his teeth. Writing his number on their palm, looking up at them, capping the pen. Gently placing it in their open palm before standing straight. Giving them a wink and wave while opening the jingling door,
“See ya’ darl’.”
