When we sold the French rights to Love and Other Unknown Variables, I wondered how the poor translators would fare with some of the strange slang Charlie and his friends used, especially how his description of Mrs. Dunwitty's choice of paint, flamingo ass pink as he called it, would translate. . First thing I did when I received my copies was to look for it. (I actually took this picture way back in October and forgot to post it--oops!) Sadly, French readers will never know exactly what shade of pink Mrs. Dunwitty's door is. In translation it is "faded pink." I am here to fix that! . Also, I'm pretty sure flamingoes the world over are super upset about being called faded pink. . So for all my beautiful French readers, when you imagine Mrs. Dunwitty's door, think of the vibrant pink of a flamingo! . In all seriousness, I can't imagine how difficult it must be to be a book translator. To choose the right words that give the same nuanced feeling of the author's original intent. Sooo hard to do when languages and cultures do not ever perfectly overlap. Thank you, book translators for all the hours and toil (and sorry about the flamingo ass pink debacle of 2016)!! . #loveandotherunknownvariables #charliecharlotte #translation #flamingoasspink 😊 #bookstagram #booknerdigans
