So we don't know how long Gary stayed in the house/treehouse after Cheryl left. But it was at least a few years. And surely the water, electricity, and heat got shut off to that house. Poor Gary didn't have anything. I wonder if neighbors ever saw him and wondered about him, but thought maybe it was just some random kid from somewhere else playing in the treehouse

I think he might’ve been actively avoiding people, because he knew that it would mean he’d be most likely taken away and 1) still hoped his mom would come back someday 2) was angry and absolutely not in the mood and state of mind to be taken in by strangers
