J: Favorite woman writer?
I already answered this (Jeanette Winterson), but I love so many so I’m just gonna say another. My second go to is Alice Walker, but that feels like kind of an outdated answer (just because I’ve read so many fantastic woman authors in the past? The problem is I don’t read multiple books from the same author very much these days. Maybe Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie? Or Margaret Atwood? Toni Morrison?
To buck the binary I was going to name a non-binary author too, but I’m not sure if I’ve read any? So I should definitely rectify that this year. I did just learn about Sarah Gailey and their two books Magic for Liars and Upright Women Wanted (coming out this year) and am pumped to check those out. Oh! And duh, Gender Queer, A Memoir (graphic novel) by Maia Kobabe was very good.
M: Favorite classic?
This was really hard for me to decide until I remembered Slaughterhouse-Five is a classic. But there are definitely a lot of classics I like a lot (Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, The Jungle). And a lot I HATE (The Catcher in the Rye, Wuthering Heights, and The Sun Also Rises).
V: What’s your reading goal for this year?
In terms of numbers, 35. I’ve got a list going of some specific ones (There, There; The Water Dancer; You Exist Too Much; A Beautifully Foolish Eneavor; Freshwater; and My Sister, the Serial Killer to name a few), but have left some space to discover new books this year. Generally I try to improve the diversity of authors/stories I read every year, so that’s always a goal (and specifically nb authors this year I guess). I think I also want to read a few more from the 1001 list again, as well as more fantasy/sci-fi.
