NY/NJ Baykeeper is working with Rutgers University to collect freshwater Raritan River samples to test for microplastics. Microplastics will be identified by size and type and will then be tested for any contaminants attached. Next, fish and oyster larvae will be exposed to plastics to identify how the organisms are impacted. Samples are collected using a manta trawl net. The net collects all floatable materials larger than 300 microns.
The sampled site in the video is Boyd Park, New Brunswick, NJ. Normal thin green algae is seen along the dock.
