THE LAND OF WINGS AND OBELISKS

Land of Wings and Obelisks

The Land of Winds and Obelisks (abbreviated LOWAO) is Giga's planet in the Medium.

Terrain & Inhabitants

The Land of Wings and Obelisks (LOWAO) has large open plains and mountain ranges, and has a quiet, calm atmosphere. Its skies are wide and open with many clouds and little in the way of buildings to obscure them. The only buildings that do exist are the occasional sprawling white cities built by consorts that dot the planet. There is only one giant storm cloud permanently existent in the planet, and it hovers over the land's scratch construct, the Frequency Beacon.

The planet has two kinds of inhabitants: the first ones encountered are small red owls that live in little white houses built in clusters on the ground. The second kind are massive, blue falcon-like birds that reside in Cloudcastles in the sky.

Society & Culture

Each city on the planet is built around a tall white Obelisk which serves as the centre of the city. Massive blue-feathered falcons descend from Cloudcastles located above the clouds and patrol between these Obelisks. The consorts call them angels and hold city-wide celebrations when one of them roosts on their Obelisk.

Cities are built with openness in mind, with plenty of space between structures and lots of emphasis on places to fly around in. Consorts live in little birdhouse structures built in clusters from marble and other refined white materials. Because of how easily they can travel, there is little in the way of infrastructure, so there are a lot of open areas.

The Obelisks obviously form a large and central part of the consorts' culture, and the only real evidence of the consorts' knowledge of the Genesis Frog. The owls that are first encountered by Giga when he arrived on LOWAO evidently worshipped the Genesis Frog.

Later on, Giga comes across cities where the Falcons are worshipped instead.

The Falcons

The Falcons are massive, blue-feathered birds that reside in Cloudcastles built above the clouds of LOWAO. They are not falcons per se, but they resemble them strongly. The owls call them angels. The Falcons seem to know a great deal about the Obelisks, and appear to be a lot more intelligent than the owl consorts that live closer to the ground. They are also a lot less trusting, and often choose to be more enigmatic in their words.

The Obelisks

The Obelisks are white, large, towering four-sided structures that sit in the middle of every city on LOWAO. The first few meters have intricate carvings about birds and frogs. The fourth side has a large plain slab or door that slides down to reveal a terminal of sorts inside the Obelisk where a timer will begin counting down open being visited by either a player or a falcon. All Obelisks apparently run the same timer. Additionally, the door only opens for players.

Scratch Construct

The Scratch Construct on LOWAO is the Frequency Beacon, a tall black Obelisk. There is a dark storm cloud permanently hovering over it, with a massive storm raging on. The Frequency Beacon cannot be approached without first calming this storm, which requires all the other Obelisks to be activated within the same time. This cannot be done without the falcons, as there can in no way be enough players present to activate all of them within the time limit. In order to accomplish this, however, the land's quest has to be fulfilled.

Land Quest

LOWAO, while initially appearing peaceful and calm, is actually locked in a war that has developed into a perpetual stalemate between the owls that worship the Genesis Frog and the ones that worship the Falcons. The Falcons initially inhabited the lands around the Frequency Beacon alongside the owls, but the conflict became so bad that they had to pack up and leave in order to protect themselves from the Frog Worshippers.

In order to stop the owls from fighting themselves to death, the Falcons activated the Frequency Beacon to create the massive storm between the two sides. This brought the owls to the stalemate that eventually created peace again, though the two sides could never reconcile.

However the Falcons did not foresee the storm might become bigger over time. When they noticed this happening, the Falcons had to begin patrolling the Obelisks in order to limit the storm and keep it under control.

The problem is that the Falcons are slowly dying off from a mysterious disease, so the frequency of patrols is slower. Given enough time, there will be not enough patrols and the storm will become too big to control, eventually destroying the entire planet.

The quest in LOWAO is to make the storm redundant before this can happen. To do this, the Hero of Time has to make the two sides of the conflict reconcile, using his temporal powers to figure out a way to make the two sides work together so that the storm can be shut down with the planet's consorts' survival in good confidence.

Activating the Scratch

It is invariably difficult to activate the Scratch before completing the quest, because the storm would get in the way of the players trying to get to the Frequency Beacon.  It becomes considerably easier once the storm is shut down. If there is a Life player who manages to cure the Falcons of the disease killing them off, activating the Scratch becomes incredibly easy: if needed, and if the Hero of Time finds and unlocks the Falcons' sacred Obelisk of Clouds (a requirement to end the Falcons' plague), the Falcons themselves will scratch the construct and initiate the Scratch.
