Now that JoAnns fabrics is gone in the US, I have trouble finding fabric for any sort of project. Where do you get yours for quilts now? I miss being able to go to a place in person and pick out fabric t.t
I live in Canada and in a small town in the north, too small for a Joann’s or Michaels, or Fabricland. Even our walmart only has one aisle of sewing notions and a handful of fat quarters.
What we do have is a local quilt/fabric shop owned and ran by a local person, which is where I get 90% of my fabrics. Anything other than that I drive to a bigger town to their 2 local quilt shops and a Fabricland and stay overnight and drive home the next day. (These overnight trips are so expensive LOL like, I stock up whenever I have to go out of town for a fabric haul. 😂😂😂)
I rarely order anything online unless I’m looking for something verrrry particular.
My advice to you is look for your local quilt shop. Every town I’ve ever been to (even the village of 1200 people close to my town) has a craft/fabric shop.
I know that’s probably not very helpful, but once you locate your LQS, make friends with two or three of the regulars and they will be able to make suggestions. Even the employees at the shop should be more than willing to tell you about other places to look if they don’t have what you’re looking for.
Like, if someone is selling fabric out of their garage because they don’t have the money to own or rent a place to do business. Or maybe there is another place to get fabric that is word of mouth because the owners are terrible at advertising or not online.
And, of course, estate sales. A lifetime of collecting fabric when you’re the only sewer in the family means bins of fabric the family gets rid of after the funeral. Sad, but true.
Imma be real here: there are probably a handful of old ladies in your area that have nothing better to do than sew and buy fabric to play with. These ladies will usually be kind (if slightly out of touch and old fashioned) and will love to chat your ear off, including telling you all the places they go for their fabric.
