Hi! Just wondering - is there any way for people not in the JHP community to read the fics on the lj archive which require a login? Obvs I totally understand that those fics are locked for a reason, but a) is there any chance the authors are still around and might grant access and b) if not, should I just give up on those fics altogether or may there be another way? I don't want to intrude on a private space, but damn if I haven't looked longingly at some of those titles... Thanks very much!

Unfortunately there is no other way than creating an account and joining the community... JHP has moved over to dreamwidth, so maybe you should create a dreamwidth account, and then join the community over there. If you’re talking about fics specifically locked in JHP, then it’s enough that you join that community. If the fics are in the author’s personal blog, however, then you would have to ask the author to grant access to their blog. Usually they have no qualms about giving access to their fics!

Im sorry to force you to keep talking about this topic, bc i agree with what youre saying but: how do you feel about angst fics describing the break up? Thats also a time that actually happened, during which paul has stated that he was depressed. I have in the past read quite a few 1980 fics, but you've convinced me that they're problematic, so I'll stay away from them now... but in your opinion would that disqualify any fic which explored the pain they all definitely went through?

okay, this is the last ask i’m going to answer about this because this whole thing has just been blown way out of proportion, all because of an offhand comment i made during an ask game 

anyway, i’m glad you understand where i’m coming from, but i never set out to tell people what they should or shouldn’t read (or what they should write). if you’re uncomfortable with the subject matter now that’s one thing, i just don’t want this to become a boycott in typical tumblr fashion: “this thing has been officially labelled problematic so no one is allowed to be a fan of it.” 

as for your question, it would depend on your own comfort levels. for me personally, i don’t find fics about depression to be outright disrespectful. it’s very different than using someone’s actual murder for entertainment, imo. but this brings us back around to my original explanation, where i basically said we have no business policing anyone because we can’t know their motivations. i’m actually really drawn to fics that explore depression, i like reading them and writing them, because i suffer from clinical depression myself. could you make an argument that it’s problematic? maybe. but i’ll admit it’s not something i’ve thought about too deeply. 

to be fair, i actually don’t think i’ve read a fic about the break up but, as with any subject matter, it would just depend on how it’s handled. if i opened a fic like that and got the vibe that it was written because the author thinks paul is hot when he’s in pain or something, i wouldn’t read it and i would find it disrespectful. it all comes down to the handling of the subject matter and the motivation of the author. that’s all.

I unironically loved fanfiction when it came out lol and thought it was the sweetest most sincere message to the fans... haven't seen it since don't want to shatter that illusion since i broke up with the show shortly after that ep and havent looked back

Hi! I have a question about plotting a character-focussed story. My story is condensed into one night, and while I have the main beats of conflict mapped out, most of it is up in the air as character-based interactions which I haven't planned in detail. I do not want these interactions to be filler, but I'm having trouble finding a clear story-motivated drive for each scene. Do you have any advice as to how to make this a dynamic story, even if there isn't a lot of action/intrigue?

Character motivations will drive the plot, so you need to ask yourself: what does my character want? 

These are some questions that you can ask yourself as you go into a scene to try develop it a bit more to keep things interesting: 

What does the character want out of this interaction? 

Why does the character want this?

How does this move forward my plot or my sub-plot? 

What happens if the character A doesn’t get this? 

What is the solution that character comes to? 

How does this solution escalate the situation or lead onto the next scene?

There doesn’t need to be a lot of action/intrigue for a story to be capitivating, but readers need to feel like the story is going somewhere. Make sure that whenever your characters interact, there is always an underlying goal or motivator driving the interaction - even if the characters don’t know what it is themselves.

probably that scenario where two characters have an argument, character 1 leaves, and character 2 runs after them. that was my favourite part of the movie Two of Us which, let’s face it, is fanfic with money
