Guess what? The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association is offering a $2,500 award at the Retired Racehorse Project Makeover! Ryland just so happens to be a Louisiana bred boy from 2008, which also makes him eligible for the $1,000 “Iron Horse” award for horses aged 10 or older. His 89 starts make him eligible for the Slewrenity Perpetual Trophy and a $500 prize for the highest scoring “war horse” with more than 50 starts. Big horse, big dreams. Wouldn’t that be neat?

I miiiiight have contacted the Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association and encouraged them to follow suit with an incentive for Iowa-bred OTTBS. Why not? Foal production was down for several years and it’s driven up demand for second career prospects everywhere else. I was concerned it wasn’t my place to contact them...but what if no one else has asked them to consider offering an award? Might as well.

I’m going to miss this guy while I’m in Ireland, but one of the women who works at the stable will be riding and lunging him for me while I’m gone.
