MOQATTAM PART 2
MOQATTAM, CAIRO - PART 1
Lacking a formal waste management system, Egyptian streets are often filled with tall piles of trash. In Cairo, the trash is collected by the poorest of the poor who live in Moqattam, a mountainside slum community right outside of the city. When they collect the waste, it becomes theirs. They take it into their homes, sort through it with their hands, and salvage what they can to sell. Unfortunately, most lack proper sanitation education and end up contract diseases from touching the trash. Walking through the streets, you see homes literally filled with bags of trash and trucks carrying load upon load. Many look down upon these people as the lowest in society, but it felt like an honor to be able to visit this place for a day.
Pictured above is a nonprofit center that provides childcare, health services, and also allows women to come and make products for selling, as well as some of the streets in Moqattam.

In Kenya, one of my favorite foods was chapati, this fried pancake (kind of reminiscent of green onion pancake in Taiwanese culture). During our time in Nairobi, we had the privilege of learning how to make it from scratch!
*Funny sidenote: our team made up songs to remember all of the names of the food that we ate.

Post-Kenya
Hello all!
I just wanted to say a quick thank you for everyone who purchased postcards to support me on my recent trip to Kenya (And hello new followers!). I got back a few days ago after being gone for around 3 weeks in Africa. The trip in itself was amazing and I am excited to post some photos soon. I hope I'll be able to do a similar project and get some of my work printed in some way/shape/form in the near future. For now, postcards are my medium, but if you all have any suggestions, please let me know :D
Much Love,
Pauline
