I sometimes see comments in my gardening posts about envying my garden and all my fresh salads, with people mourning their not having space but please; all the lettuce in the two window boxes on my back stairs grew in two weeks. You do not need a yard to grow things!

The windowboxes came from a plant swap. I got the fancy blue pots from the clearance section at my garden store. The terracotta pot the basil is in is older than I am.

I started the dill from a grocery store dill bottle that was getting old. The lettuce seed cost $2.50. I think the two kinds of basil seed were $5 total. Probably the most expensive thing was the 20 lb. bag of MiracleGro potting soil. The rest is just time, and keeping up with the water.

This is my third sowing of lettuce. I'll get at least three more rounds of lettuce if the frost holds off until late October.

Grow something, and spend ten minutes a day watering and watching it. The world is horrible, but watching something small that you planted grow is so, so important as a first step to knowing you can do more when you have time and space to spread out and really dig into a bigger part of the world.

Some garden pics-- tomatoes, peppers & basil, with pest controlling marigolds, the cottage garden run amuck, the herb bed and the garage trellis that is this summer's repair project, the mixed greens in the shadiest bed (slow growth and no bolting), and the beans, cucumbers, and rhubarb.

Deliberately planted less this year to recalibrate how much we can realistically eat-- and how much watering and weeding I can keep up with.

Excellent clouds over my town yesterday.

if you only have a little garden space or just one windowbox i cannot overstate how easy it is to just grow some herbs and salad mix and then pick a handful every few days to jazz up ~everything~
