The first 500(ish) words of the project I’m working on:

The person Larissa tackles is not a vampire.

This much is clear from the moment she claps a hand over his mouth.  He’s bristly (thanks to the moustache) and a bit slobbery, but thankfully not fangy in the slightest.  Or, well—maybe it would be easier if he was a vampire; then she could just stake him and be done with it.  Sadly, she doesn’t think she can quite get away with slaying her Watcher’s son.

“That’s disgusting, dude,” she tells him, and removes her hand from his mouth to wipe the spit on his shirt.

He gives her the best shrug she supposes he can while pinned to the ground. “That’s what you get when you catch a bro by surprise.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for taking flying leaps at people as a form of greeting, but you’ve gotta give a little warning first.”

“I’ll keep that in mind the next time I see a suspicious figure lurking in the shadows. I’m sure the vampires will love it.”

“Brah, don’t even try to pretend you wouldn’t still kick their undead asses with moves like that.” He wiggles a little as if to emphasize exactly how much she kicked his ass, and it occurs to her that maybe she should let him up.

She stands and offers him a hand. “Look, Be—”

“Shitty,” he interrupts, letting her pull him to his feet. “As in my name is so shitty that I would rather be literally called Shitty than use it.”

She can’t help but snort. “Fine, Shitty. I’ve got to go, so if you’re not going to get yourself killed…”

“Oh shit, were you on patrol?” He doesn’t even let her answer before he barrels on. “You mind if I come with you, bro? I swear I won’t slow you down, I’ve been kicking ass in all my training, and I swear if I have to look at another diagram of a vamp without fighting one I’m gonna puke or something.”

She weighs her options.  All she really knows about Shitty is that he’s been away studying with the Watchers’ Council so he can follow in his father’s footsteps, and the whole point of tonight had been to get away from her Watcher.  But if he actually knows what he’s doing, it might not suck to have some backup.

“Eh, sure,” she finally says. “On two conditions.  One – you follow my lead.  Two—if I’m calling you Shitty, you’re calling me Lardo.”

He grins and extends a hand for her to shake. “Lardo the Vampire Slayer,” he says. “I like it.”
