New Super Lucky’s Tale Review

So apparently this is one of those games which is just an updated version with updated lore and story and the DLC add as a part of the game. Since I never played the previous version I see no harm in giving it a shut

Story:

A young fox named Lucky is separated form his sister after he and an evil wizard named Jinx  gets sucked into a magical book and now Lucky must find the pages of the book and reunite with his sister.

I’ll be honest, I don’t like the opening. It think it’s the tone of it with it sounding epic and how the evil wizard betrayed them and doom and gloom. But the main game is a light-hearted adventure with lovable characters, a bunch of goofballs as villains and a protagonist who barely talks. So yeah, that the opening and ending fall flat to me.

As for whats going on in the main game. Not much but what’s there is pretty enjoyable. Like this little mail golem who just wants to be you friend. Or the worms who are excited about their harvest festival. And a resort owner worried a diva would run him out of business with her demands to name a little bit of the small adventures you get up to.

And the villainous Kitty Litter are an enjoyable pack of baddies. I do have a bit of an issue of them as bosses in terms of bad guys, they are a fun bunch. You got an arrogant martial artist, a crazy inventor, A military general and his dumb but strong twin brother, and a diva. And of course, there’s their dad, Jinx who’s a generic evil wizard with illusion powers but you can find him hidden in every hub world and he’ll just talk how amazing and wonderful his kids are. It’s like this Prozd skit:

And honestly, it’s more characterization than what Lucky or his sister receive. And who the hell is Lucas? Besides a brother we never see.

Gameplay:

First of, this game controls really well.You just move around, have a double jump,spin attack and a dive/dig move. Pretty simple moveset and the game takes full advantage of that.  They are several sections where you to dig around to get coins get under some fences, and you can use you’re tail attack to not only hit enemies but  can use it like a hover during a jump. So yeah, I like the moves we got.

As for what you do, you simply have to get to the end of the level. 2 things

1: While this is a standard 3D platformer, they do try to mix things up so evey level in a hub would be different. Like the first level is a sort of open level where you have two paths to take. You could have simple 2D style level or an auto run level. Maybe a level where you go though a maze while looking for bunnies.  Or one of the final levels being a carnival filled with challenges for you to do.

2: There are 4 pages per level. Of course there’s the one for getting to the exit but there’s one for getting 300coins in a level, one for getting all letters to spell “LUCKY”, and one more for finding a hidden challenge room or just hidden somewhere in the level. And in the hub there are puzzle rooms that can also give you a page if you beat them. And you don’t really need that many pages to move forward and fight the boss.

Of course this game can be very easy, maybe too easy to those who don’t appreciate difficulty options and want everything to be very hard. But the final boss was tense and if you really want a challenge, the postgame has you covered.

But there is something I didn’t like about the and that is the bosses. Or rather 3 of the bosses. Sure, there is some challenge to them but my issue is that they seem very uninvolved. The first boss is the worst as I don’t think he even attacks you. Sure they might have one unique attack but these fights are more about dodging turrets than fighting the boss, as in all these boss have a section like that. The only two bosses who don’t do this are Jinx and Lady M(who was DLC that was added into this versions story), mainly cause I felt like I was fighting them instead of some random hazards and backup(which they also do but at least they were fighting back).

Presentation:

Music is okay. It’s nice to listen to while playing. Think some stand outs were the first level, the farm music and the carival. Not much else stood out to me.

As for how this game looks. IT’S SO CUTE!!! The NPC looks so huggable like plush toys and the enemies look like marshmallows! And the bosses being adorable cats are also precious. And look at Lucky. Sure him consistently looking at you if’s facing the camera can be unsettling but you can but him in some outfits if you want to be more adorable.

Verdict:

Sure it’s easy and the bosses feel uninvolved,but doesn’t stop it from being a good platformer for newcomers.

Now, after a period of exclusivity, New Super Lucky’s Tale is set for a wider release on the Xbox One and PS4. This means that it will now be available on all consoles, and the PC via the Microsoft Store, Epic Games Store, and Steam as well.

Virtual Reality is about to smack you in the face.

Playful Corp industry veterans are making Virtual Reality from scratch.Developed exclusively for the Oculus Rift by the creators of Words With Friends. Luckys Tale is one the first studio partnership with Oculus VR. Palmer Luckey founder of Oculus stated previously that “VR will become something everyone wants before it becomes something everyone can afford.” Although Luckys Tale and space dog-fighting title EVE: Valkyrie are free with Oculus Rift pre-orders the headset will still set you back $599 USD.

VR title, Luckys Tale is a platformer that you can experienced in the third-person. It is not a first-person game. The game was “Developed new, from scratch, it’s a made-only-for-VR game” said Paul Bettner, CEO of Playful Corp. The team is made of industry veterans that worked on games like Age of Empires and StarCraft. Creativerse a current Steam game is a second VR game being developed by the team that is not part of an exclusive partnership, so expect to see it on other VR headsets like the HTC Vive.

Luckys Tale has convinced some that 3D plat-former’s can work great in virtual reality, but others have laughed at the idea. A new game-play video (below) aims to show people otherwise. In the video you can see that the camera is controlled primarily by the headsets tracking system. You can lean in, and out, and look all around in the virtual world. In the game play video, you can see the players leaning in, turn their heads, and even look towards the sky for a better view of this world.

When I tried an Oculus Rift demo headset, I felt as if I was looking into another world. Moving your head to control the camera can create a more immersive VR experience. I found the experience to be a slight work out as I’m used to my game console controllers, PC keyboard, and mouse. As Virtual Reality takes center stage I wonder how people will cope with having to move something other than eyes and fingers. I’ve been a fan of VR for a long time, but I’m still curious on how I will transition over to VR.

Luckys Tale and space dog-fighting title EVE: Valkyrie launches bundled the Oculus Rift pre-orders on March 28. Everyone who buys the Oculus Rift will get a complimentary copy of Luckys Tale after the launch. The Oculus Rift head set is open for pre-orders and has an MSRP $599.
