Rounding up Hollyoaks@25 (Originally Aired September 1999)
With Hollyoaks off air until September, we’re being treated to a look back at some of the biggest weeks in the show’s history, starting with this one from September 1999. To set the scene, villainous Rob Hawthorne had been terrorising the residents of Hollyoaks for the past three years, but was thought to have met a watery end, having been left in the middle of the English Channel following a fight with Kurt Benson. However, in true Hollyoaks fashion, Rob wasn’t dead, and made a secret return to the village following Kurt’s death in a jet ski accident...
We opened at Kurt’s funeral, and his younger sister, Lucy (Rob’s ex), was struggling to come to terms with her grief. Having already lost her younger Brother, Ollie, in a car accident, former heroin addict, Lucy, was feeling guilty about being the last Benson child standing, and wanted some time at the cemetery to herself. As Lucy’s friends made their way back to the village, they were unaware that Rob was watching them from behind a gravestone. Some time later, the gang became aware that Lucy hadn’t made it back, and a worried Tony headed off to search for her. He arrived at the cemetery to see Lucy being dragged away by Rob...
Rob took Lucy to a nautical test centre, whilst Tony, Lewis and Ruth gave chase. The trio eventually managed to find their way into the tower, but Rob ended up trapping them too. As Ruth, Lewis and Tony searched for Lucy, Lucy flirted with Rob in a desperate attempt to keep him sweet, but he was wise to her trick and rejected her. Now even more angry, Rob tied Lucy up, trapped her in some sort of pod-thing, and dropped her into the water, just as Ruth, Lewis and Tony arrived on the scene...
Unsurprisingly, Ruth, Lewis and Tony ended up in the water too, and Lewis was quick to dive down and rescue Lucy. With the group surrounded by water, and with no obvious means of escape, panic began to set in, especially when Rob began altering the temperature of the water and adding wave effects. Lewis soon had a bright idea when, upon realising where they were, theorised that there could be a life raft in the pod that Rob had used to trap Lucy. Lewis was proved right, but their relief at a spot of respite from the cold water was short lived when Rob punctured the life raft.
Back in the village, Carol was beginning to worry about her friends, especially when she awoke the following morning to find that Tony’s bed hadn’t been slept in. Carol’s worry soon intensified when she received a phone call from Rob, telling her to go the riverbank if she wanted to find her friends. Back at the centre, the group had been drifting all night, and Lucy in particular was struggling. Knowing that the group were getting weaker, and likely wanting to prolong their suffering, Rob threw a life ring and some air canisters into the water, and when Lewis dived down to retrieve them, he spotted a hatch at the bottom of the tank. As Lewis had given his canister to Lucy, he couldn’t muster enough strength to open the hatch, so Tony volunteered to use his canister to dive down and open it. As the tank began to drain, the group were sucked through the hatch, and soon washed up on the riverbank, just as Carol arrived on the scene.
As everyone swam to the side, Tony realised that Lucy hadn’t made it back, and risked his life to go back into the water to rescue her. It was touch and go as Tony attempted CPR, but there was relief all round when Lucy opened her eyes. With their ordeal over, Lewis, Tony, Ruth and Lucy returned to the village, but were soon worrying about Rob’s next move when he left an answerphone message, warning them that he would be back...
Meanwhile, there was trouble at the Cunningham’s, as Max grew concerned about baby Holly’s safety around Cindy’s boyfriend, Sean. Max confided in Mandy, who encouraged him to voice his concerns to his Mother, Angela. Although Angela was disbelieving at first, she eventually came round, and warned Sean that she would be keeping an eye on things. The situation came to a head when Angela walked in on Sean shouting at Holly and ordered him out of her house, angering Cindy, who decided she and Holly were going too. Sean was initially reluctant to allow Cindy and Holly to come with him, pointing out that his wages were barely enough to support himself, let alone her and Holly too. However, he soon changed his tune when Cindy suggested they use some money put into savings for Holly’s future, and the trio headed for their new life in a grotty caravan. Back in the village, Cindy’s Father, Gordon, was furious when he realised that Cindy and Holly had gone, and accused Angela of driving Cindy away with her exaggerated tales. However, Max made his Dad see how much danger Holly was in, and insisted that they would have to find her...
In other news this week, Kerri and Adam’s relationship hit a rocky patch, and she left to go travelling without him, whilst Carol was mortified when pages from her diary made it into a phone box, courtesy of Kate! Finally, new students, Alex, Sam, Nikki, Geri and Anna moved into the halls of residence at HCC. Whilst Alex, Sam, Nikki and Geri were keen to throw themselves into student life, Anna had a difficult start as she discovered the terrible state that her bedroom was in, and struggled to find any common ground with her new flatmates.

A Step Back in Time...
Rounding up a week of Hollyoaks Favourites (Originally aired Christmas 1997)
Hollyoaks favourites this week had a real treat in store for us, as we flashed back to Christmas 1997. Prepare for dodgy fashion, dodgy hairstyles, and some seriously dodgy acting!
Wednesday (Originally aired 18th December 1997)
It was almost Christmas in the village, but things were far from merry. The Bensons were facing their first Christmas without Ollie, who was recently killed in a car crash, whilst Kurt and Ruth couldn’t stop arguing. Ruth was hurt by Kurt’s reaction to her Christmas present, a car (complete with cassette player!) and stormed off to her work’s Christmas party. When she returned home later that evening to find Kurt still in a mood, she demanded that he sleep on the sofa.
Meanwhile, 16 year old Cindy Cunningham was feeling unwell, and had taken to her bed. Mum, Angela, believed that she was suffering from the flu, and ordered her to quarantine in her room (sound familiar?) as Cindy’s older sister, Dawn, was going through chemotherapy. However, Dawn was perfectly safe, as you cannot catch what’s wrong with Cindy! Mandy called round to see Cindy, and tried to convince her to come out with her, but Cindy refused. After Mandy stormed out, Cindy doubled over in pain...
Finally, Jack was struggling with his new houseguests, the Patrick family, particularly Sol, who had not taken to the new set up and was determined to make everyone as miserable as he was.
Thursday (Originally aired 22nd December 1997)
It was Christmas Day, and over at the Cunningham’s, Cindy was still feeling unwell, and hiding the fact that she was pregnant. She sloped off after dinner, snuck into Tony’s video shop, gave birth alone and went on to abandon the baby.
Dawn and Jambo also made themselves scarce from the Cunningham’s celebrations and went for a romantic trip on a stolen rowing boat. Dawn was delighted when Jambo proposed to her, however, in emotional scenes, Dawn, who was suffering from leukaemia, later passed away in Jambo’s arms.
Elsewhere, it was a busy day for Tony as he faced the prospect of three Christmas dinners, thanks to his three girlfriends! Rob and Lucy spent some time alone together whilst Kurt and Sol’s behaviour spoiled the festivities over at The Dog.
Friday (Originally aired 29th December 1997)
It was Dawn’s funeral, and the family were struggling to come to terms with her death. Jambo in particular was finding things tough, and he broke down after the funeral.
Meanwhile, Cindy was struggling following her dramatic birth, and collapsed at the funeral. Emmerdale’s Ashley Thomas, posing as a Doctor, called round to see her, and horrified the Cunningham’s when he revealed that Cindy had recently given birth!
Elsewhere, Kurt and Ruth patched things up, whilst Carol was keen to do likewise with best mate, Lucy. Finally, Sol continued to be a little shit.
