Nobody’s family is perfect and Lucy wouldn’t want to live in one that was. Yes, she always did well in school and followed more rules than she broke and knew the difference between being honest and being rude – but she doesn’t think she’s perfect. It’s stressful enough just being good, she doesn’t want to even try to be perfect. Being a perfectionist isn’t the same; Lucy just believes in doing things the right way the first time so she doesn’t have to redo them and that’s just sensible. People ought to relax and stop assuming that just because a person cares about results that makes them an overachiever. Lucy doesn’t want to overachieve anything; she just wants to be happy, and crack bad jokes, and do good work. She certainly doesn’t want to show-up her sister over anything. Neither one of them has, as far as Lucy can tell, anything to prove to anyone – so why Molly is always so convinced that Lucy is out to make her look bad, Lucy has no idea. People have a habit of thinking the worst of her no matter what she does or why. She tries not to let it get her down, just like she tries not to get too stressed-out when something doesn’t go right the first time. That’s a lot harder. Still, she adheres to a policy of “fake it ‘til you make it,” so she strives for an easy-going attitude to counter her anxiety. Sometimes it nearly works.

Carol Matthews, even as a young girl, was an incredibly jumpy individual. The smallest scurry of her cat, or the cry of her older brother could send her running to her mother’s side. The girl was the apple of her family’s eyes.  She loved theatre, riding her bike, and putting on a performance for anyone who would listen. As she got older, Carol found solace within novels and notebooks, her entire room being filled with artistic motivation. She was constantly the ‘old soul’ of her cousins, for even at ten years old, she could tear about someone’s thoughts, and read to comprehend poetry that even her father wouldn’t dare. Her life was a fairy tale, happy family, loving home—until that fateful morning.

October 25, 2003. The small brunette girl had been running about in her yard, when her neighbor of four years pulled up to the front of the house. Mr. John had been nothing but kind to the girl and her family, the furthest thing from a stranger. So when he approached Carol with a smile, and a beckoning finger, she did not hesitate to go to him. He had taken the girl out for treats multiple times when the parents were gone, as they were now. Everything seemed up-to-par, until he took a wrong turn, then another, and then they were out of the state of Arkansas.

Carol knew something was wrong—terribly, horribly wrong. But what could she do? Open the door and shove herself onto the freeway? Scream? Risk getting hurt? Maybe she was just being overdramatic.

It was that mistake Carol would regret for the rest of her life.

Carol spent the next ten years of their lives locked inside of Mr. John’s basement—Johnathon Dubois, who had spent five years in prison when he resided in Colorado.

Carol Joann Matthews died on January 15, 2007—the day her innocence was torn from inside of her very own body.  No longer a virgin—the one thing the thirteen year old wanted to save the rest of her life, she knew she could not be the girl she was before. It was this night she began to plan her escape.

Several months later, Carol was joined by a boy just a year younger than her, Matthew Jackson. He—luckily—was not sexually abused, but was kind and warm towards Lucy. He became her best friend, not that either of them had much of a choice. The two seemed to be made for each other. This was when she began to go by her alter-ego, Lucy Carruthers.

What was left of the poor girl’s shattered when she was joined by a little girl, who went by the name Marie Matthews, whom John claimed to be Carol’s baby sister. Lucy spent her time in captivity denying this feat—for this meant two things; Her parents had replaced her, and that her own flesh and blood would have to go through the same horrors she had.

Three years Later, the trio escaped with the help of John’s son Quinten. The four ran as far as they could—three near adults, and one child—into the embrace of the city, and into the arms of other lost hearts.
