If you haven’t heard of The Hunting Party, you should really listen up. Manhattan’s newest folk act is a six-piece ensemble fronted by Erica Lane, combining soul, folk, funk, and blues so seamlessly it’s hard to believe that this band has been together for less than a year. Their sound is cohesive and melodic and astoundingly catchy without being ‘poppy’ or obnoxious.

The band got its start when Lane placed an ad on Craigslist in July of last year. She had recently moved to New York and was struggling to feel at home when her boyfriend suggested she start a band to help with the transition. The first bite she got was from Erik Hamilton (banjo, guitar, harmonica, and vocals). They met at a Starbucks one afternoon and discussed their musical tastes and what they wanted out of a band. Soon after, Hamilton brought in bassist Michael Schnapp, an old friend. Next came percussionist Dan Burke and Mike Landry (guitar and vocals). The band played a few shows at places such as Arlene’s Grocery, Trash Bar, and the National Underground before adding their sixth and final member. David Letch contributes his talents on the keys, which really rounds out the overall sound.
“Angeline” is the song that really cements the talent and the bright future this band has. It has an incredibly soothing melody that really allows Lane’s vocal talents to shine. Her voice is strong and warm, reminiscent of Grace Potter and Jenny Lewis. At times, it’s hard to believe that such a powerful sound comes out of such petite person. Overall, the Hunting Party has a sound that is very accessible and easy to listen to. The dynamic works so well because the musical talents of the boys are matched by the strength and depth of Lane’s voice. Written by Meghan Nowakowski @megnowa
