My Jewel Orchid (Ludisia discolor).

Unlike a lot of other orchids this one can and should be planted in soil.

I've had multiple pots of this one, because they are also very easy to multiply with cuttings. I tend to give them away as presents now and then.

They also unfailingly bloom around Christmas every year. Unfortunately they don't really have a scent.

The shiny velvety leaves are beautiful all year round.

Ludisia discolor is a terrrestrial orchid native to tropical Asia. It is one of the "jewel orchids" known for their decorative foliage.

Since I mentioned it, here’s Ludisia discolor blooming on the windowsill. This plant is mostly grown for its lovely, velvety foliage, but I think the blooms are cute too.

A plant of the tropical forest floors of Southeast Asia Ludisia discolor (black jewel orchid) is tolerant of lower light levels. Mainly grown as a foliage houseplant it does produce tall clusters of white flowers which contrast with the dark foliage.

First picture is from July 23 2021 and the second if from today August 7 (it looks brighter than it actually is).

Ludisia feels like one those plants and gets weird and leggy after awhile, the stems will snake around in the pot similar to an iris and I thought that maybe I should start again so I did. I took a glass bowl, some leca at the bottom and them moss and I just stuck a bunch of the leggy pieces from the mother plant into the moss. I let the moss dry a little before I water. Sometimes I I spray the moss a little to make sure it’s evenly moist. The fun part of the glass pot is that you can see all the new growth making it’s way through the moss.

I recommend to start them over at times. I want to do a similar one with macodes but I don’t have enough of that at the moment.
