Crossroad Contractors

Crossroad Contractors:

Fairies are summoned by a human wishing on their star (Abeir-Torli also known as “Cradle Of Life”) and create a deal granting almost anything the dealmaker wishes in exchange for their life. 

(Fairies can do crossroad deals with Super-Naturals by being summoned through a specific spell but will have more limitations than the humans.) Deals typically last up to 10 years but the contractor is able to reduce it to one year on their own accord or extend it up to their limit which is 25 years. Fairies collect souls/energy after contracts are up to create newborn fairies. They aren’t able to collect their soul until that time period is up but if the person dies in some other way such as an accident, their soul is then collected by the Unseelie Court. Examples of what crossroads fairies have done include granting talent, fame, and fortune; healing the terminally ill or badly injured; resurrection; making people fall in love with each other; and assassination. However, what is received from the deal appears to be generally limited by the wording the person uses. Other people who made a deal at the same time for similar things got the fame and fortune they were seeking as well as the talent they had specifically asked for it. At rare occasions and perhaps slow seasons, the Seelie and Unseelie court will hold a competition to prey on the vulnerable/weak and create crossroad deals that way. It is suggested that killing the fairy who holds a soul will cancel the contract. This concept has never been proven, in fact, this may mean that the death of the fairy who controls the contract only transfers the contract.

Infant Swapping

Infant Swapping:

Infant Swapping is when a fairy is assigned to a newborn or infant in the womb and swap the changeling fey for a human baby. Changeling are fairy children who have low levels of fairy magic not suitable to serve in the fairy community who are instead left in place of a human child stolen by the fairies. 

Whatever magic they do possess wears off usually after one dream in their slumber in the human world. The theme of swapping children in the human mothers womb is common in medieval literature and reflects concern over infants thought to be afflicted with unexplained diseases, disorders, or developmental disabilities. The act of abducted human child are used to strengthen fairy stock which helps keeps people in believing in them to keep their services at bay. If people stop believing, their purpose will be nonexistent, and they will go extinct. The Seelie Court Fairies will collect to raise the human child, making it laugh and live a fruitful childhood until the age of 13 they will return it to Earth from their realm. (The Unseelie Court Fairies will typically do the opposite.) In rare cases, the very elderly of the fairy people would be exchanged in the place of a human baby, so that the old fairy could live in comfort, being coddled by its human parents. Once a child is baptized, fairies cannot take the child until the human reach 13 years old when they are able to perform a crossroad contracted deal. Due to pervasive and powerful Feywild magic, it is the Summer Queen that decides if the non-fay are subject to immediate memory loss, and may not remember any of their time spent in the Feywild otherwise, they can be granted to at least have vivid dreams that will display memories often recollecting the scenery of their stay, emotional memories, and a vision of their assigned fairy. In cases where a human spent up to the age of 13 in Abeir-Torli, their memories may be more vivid than those who were more short-term.

Fairy Lore

The History

Starting with the beginning of Feywild, also known as the Plane of Faerie, is a verdant home of both cruel and endless desires. Feywild was created by The primordials, or “Dawn Titans”, were god-like beings made of manifest entropy and elemental energy. Finding some things of the Prime too "bright" or too "dark," the Primordials tore these parts from the Prime, creating the heart of Feywild and the Plane of Shadow (which later became the Shadowfell), thus creating Feywild citizens grouped into two factions, the Seelie Fey and the Unseelie Fey, respectively.

The creatures that inhabited this world of Feywild were the Seelie Fey and there they came in many forms, but after some conflicts with dragons the fairies of the Seelie Court left their prime and created a new settlement called Abeir-Torli, the brightest star just right of the Moon from Earths eye.

It wasn’t until a fairy was caught in crossroads with a human on earth alongside many other exposed Supernaturals is when Tabula Rasa was formed. With the new settlement, the Seelie Court would move to a new location, Holloway Woods just North of the major city until it was safe to intermingle with human contact.
