Ancardia's Greatest Monstrosities--The Lufferlang
Classification: Monstrosity
Habitat: Dry forests in the Southern hemisphere, generally limited to Nechola and the Silver Coastlands.
A bizarre, arcanely-sourced bestial monstrosity, the lufferlang has unusual and mysterious origins. The one thing which is understood is that such an animal would not have developed naturally and is certainly the result of a mage’s or alchemist’s long-forgotten experiment.
Lufferlang are large creatures, standing at the height of an average horse at the shoulder and with a legspan which is roughly 2.2 meters across. The head is distinctly horse-like, while the limbs are all strangely reminiscent of one of the several species of giant Underground spiders. The abdominal area in between is an amorphous and unidentifiable shape, usually with the hair texture somewhat like the horse but the bulbous shape and fur coloration of the spider portion. Despite its arachnid portions, the lufferlang is a pure herbivore with a diet very similar to a normal horse’s, and its skittish nature makes it difficult to approach to learn much more. It isn’t clear as of yet how such creatures breed or reproduce themselves, though many hypothesize that it breeds and lays eggs much like a spider, and researchers’ inability to identify buried or camouflaged eggs explains how birth or mating has never been observed. Foal-sized “lufferlings” with spiderling-like legs have been observed, but not where they appear from. Despite being a creature that arose from arcane exploits, the lufferlang’s abilities are quite mundane and behaves much like an ordinary rare, flighty wild animal.
