The lufferlang is a fearsome critter from North American lumberjack folklore. It is said to resemble a large spider with triple-jointed legs, a bushy tail and a horse's head.

The lufferlang's unique legs allow it to run in any direction at incredible speeds. It can kill victims in a single bite, injecting them with deadly venom. However, they can be stopped by showing them their own reflection in a mirror, which will cause them to flee in terror.

why i sometimes hate having North American cryptids & monsters as a special interest:

one of (if not the) earliest printed references to a creature called the luferlang (sometimes spelled lufferlang, with an extra F) depicts it thusly:

It’s a creature notable for having triple-jointed legs, and a tail sticking out smack in the center of its spine. The word choice suggests a mammal, and it’s drawn with equine attributes. 

And yet every time i find a reference to this thing on some cryptozoology website or the like, some damn fool has decided oh it’s a giant spider. What is this euhemerizing bullshit?
