Luffy-- Chapter 940 of One Piece

Luffy attempting to train this chapter and getting frustrated is going to make for a great sequence in the anime. He’s failing to bring forth his advanced Armament Haki, but he’s still pummeling people. I think it’s a gag that’ll work especially nice with music, Tanaka’s voice and some action. I’m already looking forward to it. 

My favorite sequence this chapter has got to be when Luffy casually knocks out the gaurds so he can have a private conversation with Hyo. It’s so blase, and so very Luffy. He is so strong, and sometimes I think it can be easy to forget. 

The other thing that’s so very Luffy? Forgiving Caribou because he claims he’s changed. I can practically hear the Strawhats groaning in frustration lol. Despite everything that’s happened, Luffy’s still a cinnamon roll. Never change Luffy. 

I also love this plot development of more than just “the old man” becoming an ally, and the camp being full of old Yakuza bosses. I couldn’t help but think that all these prisoners have been watching Luffy mess around with the guards, be unabashedly unafraid of his fate, and kick people’s asses. They know Luffy is strong so I think the recruitment might be a little easier than Raizo assumes. Luffy has that way with people.

Luffy- Chapter 939 of One Piece

This was such a fun chapter! I think it’s awesome how Luffy is able to use his Observation Haki since he worked so hard to gain the ability to see a little into the future. Obviously these are not strong opponents, and Luffy could beat them at any time, but it’s way more important to use this time for training. 

I’m all about the training.

And look at that smile. He’s having so much fun. I’ve said it before but, when Luffy has fun, I have fun. I’m also loving the continued development between Luffy and “the old man.” He hops onto Luffy’s back Yoda style for a bit there as our protagonist runs around trying to unlock how to use the next level of Armament Haki. We all suspected the old man was strong and important, so it’s a nice payoff to see Luffy get another teacher. And because Luffy will have someone teach the ability to him, it shouldn’t be as hard as him trying to figure it out while getting pummeled to death. 

These are skills Luffy needs to learn if he’s going to become the Pirate King, and I like that he’s learning them one at a time. The upgrade to Conqueror’s Haki should also be fun, and from where I’m sitting, I think it would be cool if Shanks were the one to teach him. 

I’m guessing next chapter will have at least a few pages dedicated to Luffy learning how to use advanced Armament Haki and I AM HERE FOR IT. Definitely looking forward to next week.

Luffy- Chapter 935 of One Piece

We got a lot of Luffy this chapter and I am so happy. Oda’s dropped some hints as to who this old man is (someone rather important) but frankly, I’m more interested in their relationship as a whole. This arc-only character feels fresh to me, and I’m starting to fall in love with his and Luffy’s dynamic. 

A couple months ago when Luffy first got himself into prison I wondered if his time there would equate to some type of training, since he was doing a lot of manual labor. It’s looking like my instincts were right about that, with Luffy saying wearing the sea stone cuffs was a type of training. Knowing Oda, we can expect this to payoff at a later date. 

I also love how calm Luffy is when sitting in front of Queen. This is nothing new for Luffy as he’s faced death before, but in this case, he knows Raizo is around somewhere with the keys to his freedom. It just speaks to his trust and faith in others, which is one of my favorite Luffy traits. He has never believed he can succeed on his own, and that sets him apart from many of his shonen hero counterparts. 

I hope the next chapter will give us more of Luffy’s subplot.

Luffy- Chapter 937 of One Piece

We only got to see what Luffy is up to for a couple of panels, but what we did see progresses his plot forward. On Whole Cake island, Luffy worked hard in the midst of his battle with Katakuri to improve his Observation Haki. Here, it seems, Luffy is actively working to improve his Armament Haki. I like how the prison stuff is more lighthearted than WCI, and it gives the idea Luffy can improve while fighting AND having fun. After all, when Luffy smiles, I smile.

If Luffy can tap into whatever Rayleigh showed him, that’s going to give him a huge boost for fighting Kaido and his subordinates later. I don’t think Oda’s going to have Luffy win by simply punching Kaido super hard (he said the fans deserved better) but Luffy will definitely be having a rematch with Kaido regardless of how Kaido eventually falls. 

Big Mom is a curve ball in this arc, and her presence is so unexpected, I can’t be sure what will happen. But Big Mom without her memory is charming and I really like her bonding with Otama (who would’ve ever thought that?!) so I kind of want her to team up with Luffy. Whether she regains her memories or not, Luffy is in for a big surprise. A really big surprise

Luffy-- Chapter 934 of One Piece

After a two month absence from the manga, our rubber captain has finally returned! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been enjoying the chapters and what everybody’s been up to, but god I’ve missed him.

And in this chapter, Luffy is, well, Luffying 😂. Kidd has escaped and the old man Luffy gave his meal tickets to is getting beat up. So what does Luffy do? He immediately intervenes with a huge grin plastered on his face. 

I love him.

Luffy- chapter 919 of One Piece

My gut feeling from last week’s chapter was that Otama was going to exit the story for a little bit, so I wasn’t surprised to see her leave. Not to worry though, she’ll be back.

The gag between Luffy and Law was GREAT, and I especially enjoyed it because we the audience were just as confused as Luffy during this chapter! Luffy’s “Law! Just be clear about what you’re saying!” was such an on the nose joke. Oda knows exactly what he’s doing to us, lol.

It was nice to see a reunion with some of the Strawhat crew, and it makes me feel impatient for the rest of them to join. And Jimbei. I need him back.

Luffy’s face in the last panel definitely mirrored my own. I verbally said out loud “whaaaat?!” when I read what Kin’emon said. Oda throwing them curveballs again.

We’re into the second mini arc of Wano. Exciting stuff!

Luffy– Chapter 918 of One Piece

I love him. 

Everything about this chapter made me so happy. From Luffy and Otama working together to escape, to Luffy wheeling in an entire feast for a starved village and bringing happiness to everyone, to how much Luffy acts like his brother and doesn’t even realize it. So precious.

In the simulpub edition of WSJ, Viz always has a little chapter recap to summarize what happened the week before. They called Luffy’s antics in Wano like that of Robin Hood, and it’s so true! I can’t believe I didn’t make that connection before. 

Going into Wano, I don’t think anyone imagined the first major part of this arc would be Luffy running around stealing from the rich and giving it to the poor, but that’s why Oda is such a good storyteller. He gave us something completely unexpected, yet delightful all the same. 

Clearly we’re not done with Otama’s story line, but I’m wondering if she’ll tag along for most of the arc, or if Luffy will leave her behind for parts of it and check in with her at different intervals. She’s a child after all (even Luffy recognized he wasn’t strong enough to participate in full out pirate battles as a kid) but at the moment, she seems safer by his side. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what Luffy decides to do.

Meanwhile, I’m very intrigued by the “Ghots of Wano” and we haven’t heard from the other Strawhats in quite some time. Will we see a check-in with the others, or is Oda just going to keep us all in suspense until Luffy finds them?
