Pieter Bruegel the Elder used to live in the region called the Low Countries, or what was then the Netherlands and now Belgium. At the time Bruegel’s country was under the rule of Spain. The foreign occupation caused much unrest and so did the new Protestant religion as they tried to gain a foothold in the Catholic Low Countries. Themes stemming from these conflicts are common in Bruegel’s paintings. His works often pose riddles. When viewing Bruegel’s work you not only look at what is happening on the surface of his paintings but also what he hid under them.

The painting her is known in English as The Land of Cockaigne, but in Dutch ‘Het Luilekkerland’. In medieval times, Cockaigne was a mythical land of plenty, but Bruegel's depiction of Cockaigne and its residents is not meant to be a flattering one. He chooses rather a comic illustration of the spiritual emptiness believed to derive from gluttony and sloth, two of the seven deadly sins.

De rollende keukens

  Ik kreeg laatst al weer een uitnodiging via Facebook voor het Hemelvaart weekend van 13 t/m 17 mei a.s: de Rollende Keukens komen weer naar onze hoofdstad. Vijf dagen lang wordt het Westergasterrein omgetoverd tot één groot LUILEKKERLAND. Dat wil ik dit jaar echt niet missen!!
