pitkä matikka (halventava)
i think something ive come to realize about finnish lukio vs american high school is that finnish hs gives the responsibility to its students
people talk a lot about how we dont get any homework and thats not completely true, we do, but theres quite little mandatory stuff and most teachers wont even necessarily go around and check if people have actually done it
we check it in class and you can raise your hand to answer the questions but the teachers trust you to be smart enough to do it by yourself so we dont get 3 pages of homework a day that we HAVE to turn in to pass a class
in zoom classes we dont have to keep our cameras on for the whole class. most of the time people dont have to turn their mic on either, you can just type in the chat and its just fine. i went for months last year not showing my face to a single student at my school. the teachers trust you to listen and dont require you to show that you are every minute
meanwhile from what ive heard of american education, everyone has a ton of homework and assignments they have to turn in, people have to keep their cameras on in zoom etc,, and thats just stupid to me
a student who understands a concept will not have to do pages and pages of assignments about it. a student who knows about something might not need to listen in class. and they personally know best what they know, so whats the point of forcing them to relearn it
students do know what theyre doing, and they know what they know and how to learn something they dont. in finland a student whos struggling will listen to the class willingly and definitely do the homework and maybe even extra work to learn the things they need to. and if they dont? well, thats their head on the platter then! thats no skin off of the teachers back. obviously they want you to do well but they treat you like an adult in the way that they trust you to know what you need, and ultimately i think treating near adults like kids who dont know at all what they need to do just makes them hate school more
Tajusin tässä että se deadline tais olla ylihuomenna… eikai siinä sit vois alottaa jossai vaihees
