“Lu? Please, wake up,” Hakoda begged.
Lu Ten groaned, his head tilting weakly toward the sound of Hakoda’s voice. Relief flooded Hakoda at the flicker of golden eyes—only for it to vanish when they slipped shut once more.
“Omega, wake up,” he ordered, his Alpha voice rumbling in desperation. He hated using it, but nothing else seemed to work. When there was no response, fear clenched around his heart. “Fuck!
He raked a hand through his hair, forcing himself to think. He’d never seen heat sickness this bad—because an Alpha always stepped in before it got to this point.
During their heats, Omegas were at their most vulnerable and needed their Alpha or pack to reassure them that they were safe. Most often, heats were spent between an Alpha and Omega, but the pack’s scent was incorporated in the nest so that they were present in spirit.
While the Eska probably thought she was helping, taking away the pups most likely made Lu Ten’s condition worse. Lu Ten’s mating was not one of love but convenience. Hakoda’s presence would have prevented his heat sickness from getting this bad, but their bond and trust were fragile. Lu Ten didn’t have friends and family—pack within the tribe. Bato, perhaps… So, his pups would have brought him the most comfort.
His mating to Hakoda was not one of love but of duty. If their bond had been stronger, Hakoda’s presence alone might have been enough to keep the heat sickness from taking hold. But Lu Ten had no pack here, no one beyond Bato, perhaps. His pups were the only ones who could truly comfort him.
