One of my favorite animated movies of all time is 1983’s “Twice Upon A Time.” I was an instant fan the first time I watched a bootleg VHS version of this lost Lucasfilm masterwork and I'm still a fan to this day. The plot is simple, Ralph the all-purpose animal and his Chaplinesque sidekick Mumford must stop the dastardly plot of the evil Synonamess Botch, who wants nothing more than to fill the world with nightmares. They’ll do it, too, with help from a colorful assortment of unlikely heroes.
The best part about it, is its unabashed weirdness, “Twice Upon A Time” is outrageously witty, sharply intelligent and masterfully animated, with solid performances from a virtual smorgasbord of savvy voice actors you've never heard of. The result is darkly whimsical and nightmarishly imaginative adult entertainment, all wrapped up in a rainbow cellophane cotton candy wrapper that makes it seem much sweeter than it is. Best line: “Happy as rats they are. They tap dance not, neither do they fart.” Do yourself a favor and rediscover this overlooked classic.
Monthly Movie Vote Sneak Peek 6/6
Twice Upon a Time (1983), an underrated animated masterpiece long forgotten until recently. Directed by Oscar-winner John Korty and produced by a fresh-off-of-Star Wars George Lucas, Twice Upon a Time is the creative, manic and hilarious tale about two would-be heroes trying to save the world from drowning in nightmares after they’re tricked into stopping time. Join Ralph the All-Purpose Animal, Mum the Mime, superhero-in-training Rod Rescueman, damsel-out-of-distress Flora Fauna and their Fairy Godmother (or FGM for short) in a madcap journey that can only happen Twice Upon a Time.

George Lucas executive produces the animated delight Twice Upon a Time from directors John Korty and Charles Swenson. In its once-upon-a-time world, our heroes are Ralph, the all-purpose animal, and his constant companion, Mumford, who only talks in sound effects. Their mission is nothing short of saving the cosmos from the dastardly plot of Synonamess Botch, who wants to unleash a barrage of nightmare bombs to ensure nonstop bad dreams. They cross paths with a colorful army of characters, including Ratatouie, the musclebound - and pea-brained - Rod Rescueman and Scuzzbopper, Botch's scheming court jester and screamwriter.
