Ten years ago, acclaimed Scottish filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland, State of Play, The Mauritanian) released one his most criminally overlooked films, a beautifully naturalistic and powerfully moving historical action adventure based around the greatest mystery of the ancient Roman empire - the disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the wilds of pict-controlled Scotland in AD 140. Channing Tatum is brilliant as the son of the Legion’s lost commander, venturing into the barbarian wastes beyond Hadrian’s Wall to dsicover his father’s fate and bring home the legendary standard, with only his Celtic slave (Jamie Bell, also brilliant) for company. Essential viewing for fans of epic action, or even just the smouldering bromance that forms between its co-stars, this movie deserves a serious reappraisal. Here’s to a decade of this underappreciated gem ...

One of my favorite animated movies of all time is 1983’s “Twice Upon A Time.” I was an instant fan the first time I watched a bootleg VHS version of this lost Lucasfilm masterwork and I'm still a fan to this day. The plot is simple, Ralph the all-purpose animal and his Chaplinesque sidekick Mumford must stop the dastardly plot of the evil Synonamess Botch, who wants nothing more than to fill the world with nightmares. They’ll do it, too, with help from a colorful assortment of unlikely heroes.
The best part about it, is its unabashed weirdness, “Twice Upon A Time” is outrageously witty, sharply intelligent and masterfully animated, with solid performances from a virtual smorgasbord of savvy voice actors you've never heard of. The result is darkly whimsical and nightmarishly imaginative adult entertainment, all wrapped up in a rainbow cellophane cotton candy wrapper that makes it seem much sweeter than it is. Best line: “Happy as rats they are. They tap dance not, neither do they fart.” Do yourself a favor and rediscover this overlooked classic.
Divisive, uncompromising, and brilliant, Dennis Hopper's final directorial effort is turning 40 with a 4K restoration.
Does Jingoro like Afflicted - Dawn of Glory?
How about something nice for the poor anime cat. Have to be kind to ourselves, you know?
The Blacker The Berry by Wallace Thurman is still so relevant today.
It's amazing.
