WHY MOON PHASES MATTER (Gravitational Pull on Water = Us)
Hello beautiful souls ✨
You've been told: "Do new moon rituals for beginnings, full moon for manifestation."
But WHY?
Is it just tradition, or is there actual science behind lunar timing?
Here's what they don't tell you: The moon's gravitational pull affects water. Your body is 60% water. The moon literally moves the fluids in your body the same way it moves the ocean.
This isn't mystical. This is physics.
Today we're exploring why moon phases actually matter for witchcraft—not just because "the ancients said so," but because there's measurable, physical, biological reality to lunar influence.
We'll cover:
The science of lunar gravity (tides, biological rhythms, proven effects)
How this translates to magical timing (working WITH natural energy, not against it)
Each moon phase broken down (what's happening physically + energetically)
Why this system works across cultures (it's based on observable nature)
When to ignore moon phases (they're guidelines, not rules)
How to track lunar effects on YOUR body/mind
This is Elements & Correspondences That Actually Make Sense—where we explain the physics and biology behind magical timing.
Let's talk about why the moon isn't just pretty—it's powerful.
THE SCIENCE: LUNAR GRAVITY & WATER
Before we get mystical, let's get physical:
THE MOON CREATES TIDES
This is not debatable. This is observable, measurable physics.
How tides work:
The moon's gravitational pull attracts water on Earth
Water on the side of Earth facing the moon is pulled toward it (high tide)
Water on the opposite side also bulges out due to centrifugal force (another high tide)
Areas between these bulges experience low tide
As Earth rotates, locations move through these zones (two high tides, two low tides per day)
The sun also affects tides, but the moon's influence is stronger because it's closer.
During full and new moons (when Sun, Moon, and Earth align), tides are MORE EXTREME (spring tides).
During quarter moons (when Sun and Moon are at 90° to Earth), tides are LESS EXTREME (neap tides).
This is not metaphysics. This is astronomy and physics.
YOUR BODY IS MOSTLY WATER
Human body composition:
Adults: 55-60% water
Infants: 75% water
Blood: 90% water
Brain: 73% water
Muscles: 79% water
If the moon can move OCEANS (which weigh trillions of tons), can it affect the water in your body (which weighs much less)?
Skeptic argument: "The gravitational force is too weak to measurably affect individual bodies. The ocean moves because there's SO MUCH water. Your body's water isn't enough mass to be noticeably pulled."
Fair point. The direct gravitational pull on your personal water content is minuscule.
BUT—
The moon affects BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS in ways we can measure, even if we don't fully understand the mechanism.
PROVEN LUNAR EFFECTS ON BIOLOGY
These are scientifically documented:
1. MARINE LIFE REPRODUCTIVE CYCLES
Many marine species time reproduction to moon phases:
Coral spawning (often full moon)
Sea turtles laying eggs (full moon, high tide)
Grunion fish (specific moon phases for beaching to lay eggs)
Oysters open/close shells in rhythm with tides (even when removed from ocean and placed inland—the pattern persists)
This is PROVEN. The moon affects biological timing in marine life.
2. MENSTRUAL CYCLES
Controversial but researched:
Human menstrual cycles average 28-29 days (same as lunar month)
Some studies show synchronization with moon phases (especially full/new moon)
Other studies show NO correlation
Pre-electric-light societies showed more synchronization (artificial light disrupts circadian/lunar rhythms)
Verdict: Unclear. Might be coincidence (28-29 days), might be real but disrupted by modern life, might be weak correlation that only affects some people.
3. SLEEP PATTERNS
Multiple studies (peer-reviewed) show:
Sleep quality decreases around full moon (less deep sleep, more wakefulness)
Takes longer to fall asleep during full moon
Total sleep time decreases slightly
REM sleep affected
Why? Not clear. Possibilities:
Brightness (even with curtains, full moon is brighter)
Gravitational effects on brain fluids (speculative)
Evolutionary programming (our ancestors were more active during full moons for hunting/safety)
Verdict: Real effect, mechanism unclear.
4. HOSPITAL/EMERGENCY ROOM PATTERNS
Anecdotal + some studies:
ER staff report more psychiatric emergencies during full moon
Some studies show increase in violent incidents
Other studies show NO correlation
Verdict: Inconsistent. Might be confirmation bias (staff expect craziness, so they notice it more). Might be weak real effect.
5. AGRICULTURAL TIMING
Biodynamic farming (based on Rudolf Steiner's work) times planting by moon:
Plant above-ground crops during waxing moon
Plant root crops during waning moon
Some farmers swear by this; some studies show yield improvements
Verdict: Mixed results. Might work due to moisture/gravitational effects on seeds, might be placebo/confirmation bias.
THE TRANSLATION: PHYSICAL EFFECTS → MAGICAL TIMING
So the moon affects tides, some biological rhythms, possibly sleep and behavior.
How does this translate to witchcraft?
The logic:
If the moon affects the physical world (tides, biological cycles), and magic works through manipulating energy/consciousness/reality, then aligning magic with lunar cycles means working WITH natural forces instead of against them.
Analogy:
You can swim upstream (against the current) or downstream (with the current). Both get you somewhere, but one is WAY easier.
Moon phases are the current. Magic is swimming.
Casting a "growth" spell during waning moon = swimming upstream (possible but harder)
Casting a "growth" spell during waxing moon = swimming downstream (working with natural momentum)
THE PHASES: WHAT'S HAPPENING & HOW TO USE IT
🌑 NEW MOON (Dark Moon)
WHAT'S HAPPENING PHYSICALLY:
Moon is between Earth and Sun
No visible light reaches us from the moon
Tides are STRONG (spring tides—sun and moon aligned)
Darkness is maximum
Gravitational pull is strong but "pulling inward"
WHAT'S HAPPENING ENERGETICALLY:
Void space
Darkness before the dawn
Potential without form
The seed in the ground (planted but not yet sprouted)
Internal, introspective, receptive
BEST FOR:
Setting intentions (planting seeds)
New beginnings (starting projects, relationships, habits)
Introspection and shadow work (darkness reveals what light hides)
Rest and renewal (especially the 3 days around exact new moon)
Divination (the veil is thin in the void)
AVOID:
Expecting immediate results (this is planting time, not harvest)
Major manifestations (energy is too internal/receptive)
Forcing action (this is rest before the build)
WHY IT WORKS:
New moons historically were dark (no streetlights)—humans rested/reflected
Tides are strong but pulling inward—symbolic of gathering energy before release
Biologically, some people feel more tired/introspective during new moon
🌒 WAXING CRESCENT
WHAT'S HAPPENING PHYSICALLY:
Moon is 1-49% illuminated, growing
Visible as thin crescent after sunset
Tides are weakening (moving toward neap tides)
Light is increasing daily
WHAT'S HAPPENING ENERGETICALLY:
First breath after the void
Seedling pushing through soil (barely visible but growing)
Faith and trust (can't see results yet, but movement has begun)
Building momentum slowly
BEST FOR:
Taking first action on new moon intentions
Building habits (small, consistent steps)
Courage and faith work (trusting the unseen)
Attraction magic (pulling things toward you—beginning of the pull)
AVOID:
Giving up because you don't see results yet (too early)
Rushing (this is gentle building, not sprinting)
WHY IT WORKS:
Light increasing = energy increasing
Momentum is building (small but real)
Psychologically, seeing progress (even tiny crescent) is motivating
🌓 FIRST QUARTER
WHAT'S HAPPENING PHYSICALLY:
Moon is 50% illuminated (half-moon)
Sun and Moon are at 90° angle to Earth
Tides are WEAKEST (neap tides)
Light/dark are balanced
WHAT'S HAPPENING ENERGETICALLY:
First challenge
Decision point (continue or quit?)
Obstacles appear
Imbalance and tension (half light, half dark = not settled)
BEST FOR:
Pushing through obstacles
Making decisions (go/no-go)
Strength and courage work
Taking bold action
Addressing resistance
AVOID:
Quitting when it gets hard (this phase TESTS commitment)
Ignoring problems (they'll compound)
WHY IT WORKS:
Balanced but tense energy (equal light/dark creates friction)
Tides are weak = less external support = you must provide your own force
Psychologically, this is when new habits meet resistance (the "week 2 slump")
🌔 WAXING GIBBOUS
WHAT'S HAPPENING PHYSICALLY:
Moon is 51-99% illuminated, nearly full
Light is increasing rapidly
Tides are strengthening again (approaching spring tides)
Almost at peak brightness
WHAT'S HAPPENING ENERGETICALLY:
Refinement and preparation
Almost there, but not quite
Final adjustments before completion
Anticipation and building excitement
BEST FOR:
Fine-tuning plans
Perfecting and polishing
Building energy for full moon peak
Preparing for culmination
Gratitude for progress
AVOID:
Rushing to completion (patience—let it ripen)
Skipping details (this is refinement time)
WHY IT WORKS:
Light is strong and increasing—energy is high and building
Tides strengthening = external support returning
Psychologically, "almost done" is motivating but also tempting to cut corners
🌕 FULL MOON
WHAT'S HAPPENING PHYSICALLY:
Moon is fully illuminated (100%)
Sun and Moon are opposite each other (Earth between them)
Tides are STRONGEST (spring tides)
Maximum light
Gravitational pull is maximum (pulling outward)
WHAT'S HAPPENING ENERGETICALLY:
Peak power
Culmination and completion
Everything revealed (full light—no shadows)
Release and manifestation
Overflow (you're FULL—must give/release)
BEST FOR:
Charging objects (crystals, tools, water—anything that "receives" energy)
Major manifestations
Healing work (energy is abundant)
Divination and psychic work (veil is thin, energy is high)
Gratitude and celebration
Release work (you're full—let go of what doesn't serve)
AVOID:
Starting new projects (this is completion, not beginning)
Hoarding/holding tight (full moon is about release)
Sleep (if you're sensitive—full moons disrupt sleep)
WHY IT WORKS:
Maximum light = maximum visibility = clarity
Tides are extreme (pulling outward) = release energy is strong
Biologically, sleep is disrupted, people are more awake/active/emotional
Historically, full moons allowed night activity (hunting, gathering, socializing)
🌖 WANING GIBBOUS
WHAT'S HAPPENING PHYSICALLY:
Moon is 99-51% illuminated, decreasing
Light is fading
Tides weakening (moving toward neap tides)
Still bright but declining
WHAT'S HAPPENING ENERGETICALLY:
Gratitude and dissemination
Sharing the harvest
Teaching what you learned
Processing and integrating
BEST FOR:
Gratitude work
Sharing knowledge/abundance
Teaching and mentoring
Integration and reflection
Beginning release (but not forced)
AVOID:
Hoarding (this is sharing time)
Starting new growth cycles (that was last phase)
WHY IT WORKS:
Still strong light/energy but declining = time to give back
Psychologically, after peak, we naturally reflect and share
🌗 LAST QUARTER
WHAT'S HAPPENING PHYSICALLY:
Moon is 50% illuminated (half-moon, but opposite side from first quarter)
Sun and Moon at 90° angle again
Tides are WEAKEST (neap tides)
Light/dark balanced again but declining
WHAT'S HAPPENING ENERGETICALLY:
Crossroads and decisions
Release and letting go (more actively than waning gibbous)
Breaking patterns
Clearing out
BEST FOR:
Banishing work
Breaking bad habits
Ending relationships/situations
Cord cutting
Making hard decisions about what to release
AVOID:
Clinging to what's ending
Starting new things (wrong energy)
WHY IT WORKS:
Balanced but declining = clear-eyed assessment of what must go
Tides weak = less external support, must actively choose release
Psychologically, this is when commitment to change gets tested ("Do I really want to let this go?")
🌘 WANING CRESCENT
WHAT'S HAPPENING PHYSICALLY:
Moon is 1-49% illuminated, shrinking to darkness
Visible as thin crescent before sunrise
Tides strengthening slightly (approaching new moon spring tides)
Darkness increasing
WHAT'S HAPPENING ENERGETICALLY:
Surrender and rest
Final release
Composting the cycle
Preparation for rebirth (but not rebirth yet—that's new moon)
BEST FOR:
Rest and recuperation
Final release work
Meditation and stillness
Healing sleep
Letting go of control
AVOID:
Forcing anything
Starting new projects (wait for new moon)
Overextending (this is rest time)
WHY IT WORKS:
Darkness returning = introspection returns
Energy is low = natural time to rest
Psychologically, after full release, we need integration time before starting again
WHY THIS SYSTEM IS CROSS-CULTURAL
Moon phase magic isn't just Western witchcraft—it appears in cultures worldwide.
Why?
Because the moon is observable by everyone, and its effects (tides, light, biological rhythms) are universal.
Examples:
Hindu tradition: Specific rituals on new moon (Amavasya) and full moon (Purnima)
Chinese tradition: Lunar calendar for festivals, planting, and timing important events
Islamic tradition: Lunar calendar (Ramadan follows moon phases)
Indigenous traditions worldwide: Lunar timing for hunting, planting, ceremonies
The moon doesn't care about your culture. Its gravitational pull affects everyone.
This makes lunar timing one of the MOST UNIVERSAL correspondences—it's based on observable nature, not arbitrary cultural symbolism.
WHEN TO IGNORE MOON PHASES
Moon phases are guidelines, not laws.
IGNORE MOON PHASES WHEN:
1. EMERGENCY MAGIC
If you need protection NOW, don't wait for the right moon phase. Do the magic now.
2. OPPORTUNITY IS TIME-SENSITIVE
Job interview on waning moon? Do your confidence spell anyway. Life doesn't wait for perfect timing.
3. YOUR INTUITION SAYS OTHERWISE
If full moon feels right for beginning something (even though it's "supposed to" be for completion), trust your gut.
4. YOU'RE WORKING WITH OTHER TIMING
Planetary days, sabbats, personal cycles—these might override lunar timing. Use what feels strongest.
5. YOU'RE EXHAUSTED BY TIMING RULES
If tracking moon phases makes magic feel like homework, stop. Better to do magic "wrong" than to not do it at all.
6. YOU'RE NOT AFFECTED BY LUNAR CYCLES
Some people don't feel lunar shifts strongly. If you're one of them, don't force it.
Moon phases amplify magic—they don't determine whether it works.
TRACKING LUNAR EFFECTS ON YOUR BODY/MIND
Want to know if moon phases actually affect YOU?
Track it for 3 months:
JOURNAL DAILY:
Current moon phase
Sleep quality
Energy level (1-10)
Mood
Any intuitive hits, dreams, or significant events
AFTER 3 MONTHS, REVIEW:
Do you sleep worse near full moon?
Do you feel more introspective near new moon?
Do you have more energy during waxing phases?
Are there patterns?
If YES: Use lunar timing intentionally—you're sensitive to it.
If NO: You might not be affected strongly, or modern life (artificial light, schedules) has disrupted your natural rhythms.
Either way, you'll know YOUR truth instead of relying on books.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Why do moon phases matter for witchcraft?
Because the moon's gravitational pull affects water (proven), your body is mostly water (fact), and biological systems respond to lunar cycles (documented).
Whether through direct gravitational influence, evolutionary biological programming, or psychological/cultural conditioning—lunar phases affect energy, consciousness, and results.
Waxing moon = building, growing, attracting (light increasing, tides pulling outward)
Full moon = peak power, manifestation, release (maximum light and gravity)
Waning moon = releasing, banishing, rest (light decreasing, tides pulling inward)
New moon = beginnings, intention, void (darkness, potential, reset)
This isn't arbitrary. It's observation of natural patterns + working WITH nature instead of against it.
Use lunar timing when:
You want to amplify your magic
You're working with natural rhythms
Timing isn't urgent
Ignore lunar timing when:
Emergencies arise
Your intuition says otherwise
It feels restrictive rather than supportive
The moon has been moving tides, affecting biology, and marking time for billions of years. It doesn't need your belief to keep working. But working WITH its cycles makes magic flow easier.
Now you know WHY.
YOUR TURN
Do you track moon phases in your practice?
Have you noticed biological/emotional effects from different phases?
What's your most powerful lunar magic experience?
Let's discuss. The moon affects all of us—but how it affects YOU is what matters.
Blessed be 🌙
The moon pulls the ocean. The moon pulls the fluids in your body. This is physics. When you time magic to moon phases, you're not following arbitrary tradition—you're aligning with gravitational forces that move trillions of tons of water. That's not mysticism. That's working with nature's rhythm. Now you know why witches have always been lunatics.
Jump Around [F/NB] [SFW] [cute date] [The Spire]
Erica was cuddled up to Lou when a question hit her. "Weird question, but you don't have any athletic wear at all, do you?"
Lou cocked an eyebrow and thought about it. "I have some sneakers maybe? A ratty tank top I use for painting, too. Why?"
"I had a fun idea, but we gotta get you the right clothes. Wanna go do some quick shopping?" She ran her fingers through their hair, nuzzling into them.
"Can't we lay here a little longer?" Lou took her by the chin to show their exaggerated pout.
=========
Three hours later, the two were holding hands and walking around the Donut, looking for an athletics store; it took nearly two kilometers and stopping into a dozen different interesting stores before they finally found what they sought.
Erica grabbed a pair of stretchy black shorts from a rack and held it up to Lou, eyeing it. "This should work!" She flipped through some t-shirts and found a cute form-fitting, hunter green tee in their size. They paid for the items and pointed Lou to a changing room so they could wear them out.
They walked together to an elevator up to the central column of The Spire, adjusting to the gradual lack of Earth gravity. They boarded a train for the Selene Industrial Ring (aka "moon-lite") and, once there, took an elevator out to the ring. The shift in gravity was almost imperceptible until they went to walk off the elevator car and remembered to bunny hop.
Erica took their hand and began bouncing forward, dragging them behind. "Remember the first time we came here, I told you there are trampoline parks like you've never experienced? Time to check them out!"
"I'm gonna throw up today, aren't I?" Lou asked nervously.
She giggled, continuing to gain momentum as they bounded through the sterile white hallways. "Nah, you've been up here long enough, and you spend plenty of time in Lunar gravity at the workshops. You'll be fine! Though the odds of seeing a tourist losing their lunch is non-zero."
They made their way into a room labeled "Moon Bounce". Aside from a small entry area containing a check-in desk and a row of lockers, the rest of the large room was surrounded by netting on all sides. They quickly purchased passes and grippy socks, putting their belongings into one of the lockers. "Ready?" Erica asked, beaming.
"Nervous, but let's do this," Lou said, their eyes taking in the scope of the place. They walked together into the jumping area to see trampolines covering nearly every surface, adults and children alike bouncing high into the air and even climbing the nets strung across the ceiling. "Jesus, they must be 20 meters up!"
"18, but remember -- Lunar gravity. Falling from there would be like falling 3 meters on Earth, and they'd only be hitting trampolines." As she explained this, a child took aim and jumped down, taking nearly 5 seconds to hit the floor, sinking in before bouncing up and flipping in the air.
"Okay, that was fucking cool," Lou said as they began to jump and build up some momentum. "Timing my jumps is way harder than I expected from doing this on Earth!"
"You'll get used to it," Erica said as she started to bounce higher and higher, eventually doing some quick somersaults in the air. "Once you get the hang of it, we can climb up a bit if you'd like; it's so much fun!"
They bounced in tandem for a while, trying out some tricks they never would've been brave enough to attempt in Earth gravity: backflips, bouncing on their hands, and even cartwheeling from one area to another.
"I'm gonna go up!" Erica exclaimed, jumping up onto the side netting and climbing half way up with ease. She looked to make sure she was clear and jumped off, squealing excitedly befire sinking deeply into the floor and being rebounded up. She spun virtually uncontrolled and almost hit another jumper in the process. "Sorry! Guess I need to be a bit more careful," she yelled to them as they bounced off.
Once she got back under control, she bounced back to Lou. "Accidental murder attempt aside, that was So. Freaking. Cool!"
Lou chuckled and grabbed hold of her hands, bouncing both of them together. "This place is amazing. Not sure I'll be brave enough to go all the way up this time, but holy shit!"
=========
They grabbed their items from the locker and slipped their shoes back on. "This was so, so much fun! Thanks for dragging me out of the house, babe," Lou said, pulling Erica into a kiss.
"Of course! I knew you'd love it here; we should make a regular thing of it," Erica beamed. "But now, we need showers. Badly. Back home to conserve water?"
"Sounds good to me, even if going back to Earth gravity is gonna feel so constraining now."
"Really? Try being the one always getting tied up in it." They both laughed as they held hands and made their way back down to The Donut and their apartment for some much needed rest.

Effect of Varied Phases of Lunar on the Growth and Yield Parameters of Rice Varieties
Aim: To get it and reason out the impact of lunar stages on the rice crop development and improvement.
Study Design: Analyze was spread out in Factorial Randomized Block Design.
Place and Duration of Study: Field preliminary was directed in the wetland homestead of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu during the Navarai season (Dec. 2021 - Apr. 2022).
Methodology: Treatment comprises of two elements viz., Sowing date (4 Nos.) week by week planting as for lunar stages - New moon, first quarter, full moon and second from last quarter) and Varieties (4 Nos.) in which two natural (for example Kullakar, Karunkuruvai) and two traditional assortments (ADT 43, ASD 16). Typical development rehearses were followed according to the Tamil Nadu Crop Production Guide 2021.
Results: The pooled mean worth uncovered that the seeds planted at full moon gave critical positive impact on the development boundaries, for example, plant level, number of turners, leaf region record and dry matter creation contrasted with other planted dates. Though the medicines that had blossoming stage synchronized with full moon stage were created more yield and dry matter substance.
Conclusion: The rice assortments planted in full moon stage displayed better development on analyzed than other lunar stages and the medicines had blossoming adjusted with full moon stage came about with additional yield and dry matter creation.

Moons Variable Gravity Came From Ancient Impacts
The moon’s gravity has been a headache ever since the Apollo era. Areas of “mass concentration” or mascons, discovered in 1968, affected spacecraft orbits and made landing on Earth’s neighbor a tricky challenge.
The phenomenon has puzzled scientists, but new data shows that mascons might have come to be after asteroids or comets hit the moon a long time ago. For nine months last year, until their mission ended with a deliberate crash on a moon mountain, twin washing-machine sized spacecraft Ebb and Flow circled the planet. Their work was known as the GRAIL mission (also known as Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory.) As they orbited together, gravity changes in the moon below them slightly changed their distances to each other — sometimes closer, sometimes further.
This allowed scientists to map out the mascons to high precision once they combined that information with computer models of big asteroid impacts as well as how craters on the moon evolved.
Mascons, which are invisible on the surface but appear in gravity maps as a sort of bulls-eye, arise “as a natural consequence of crater excavation, collapse and cooling following an impact,” NASA stated.
The center of the bulls-eye has stronger gravity, with a ring of weaker gravity surrounding the bulls-eye, and then another ring of strong gravity surrounding the bulls-eye and inner ring.
“GRAIL data confirm that lunar mascons were generated when large asteroids or comets impacted the ancient moon, when its interior was much hotter than it is now,” stated Jay Melosh, lead researcher and a GRAIL co-investigator at Purdue University.
“We believe the data from GRAIL show how the moon’s light crust and dense mantle combined with the shock of a large impact to create the distinctive pattern of density anomalies that we recognize as mascons.”
The findings appeared in the May 30 edition of Science. You can read the entire article here.
