Playing through the iki dlc rn, and I get that the visions are disturbing in general, but I the player am mostly scared by finding out just how much self-loathing Jin has?? I jump down a ledge and heared the Eagle say „jump farther, end your suffering“, I climb a rock and hear „one day you can‘t climb your way out of something“. Which on one hand is really cool to not be able to expect that because what else might be coded to cause an action-specific voiceline? On the other. Jin my guy you need a therapist. And he probably dealt with that (the feelings, if not the thoughts themselves) for the majority of his life!! Becoming the ghost might‘ve just made it worse

Rewatching the Kaifeng main quest rn and there‘s so much foreshadowing in the earlier parts, so I wanna note what I noticed so far. Spoilers for the main quest, the Star Stealer quest and the Granary quest. Yes, this is a cry for people to talk with me about the lore, the wwm discord is intimidating.

Yingying’s identity: a Meow Meow was noted by the thugs selling as fake treasure basin as belonging to the Wens, and it came up to Yingying after she scared them off. Plus she wears a cat hat.

Yingying was interested in MC‘s family because she recognized them by their jar of Parting Tears and them saying their aunt made it. She knew exactly who we are when we said that.

During the choice of who tries the Gold-Making Basin, Lord Shi is framed from behind through a coin-like ornament in Wen Wuque‘s chair. It‘s already obvious that he‘s the villain, but that might be a hint towards their relationship? Iirc, Wen Wuque being kicked out of Weiyang let Lord Shi (or whoever is impersonating him) come to Kaifeng in the first place?

The Dao Lord’s identity: Little Fu literally tells us that the Dao Lord is three people („Three-headed with six arms“) and we later see them disguised as a rat, and Little Fu HAS a rat hat and thus is one of the heads. Also, the Dao Lord at the Heroes Assembly only has two heads at the start and three once the battle for the basin starts. Plus we see Little Fu then, plus one of the other triplets. It also becomes clearer when the rat mask is identified by Master Pu as belonging to the Nine Mortal Ways.

Little Fu’s hat in Wheatwind Bazaar has a little tail at the back, but the one after the chase for Hong Si‘s scroll doesn‘t, so it‘s a different one, which also explains why she sounds… whinier?

Wen Wuque’s and the Dao Lord’s plan: in the scene where the Joyous Couple dies, Little Fu smiles when the crowd recognizes the Life Coin.

Wen Wuque shakes his head with a smile when Lord Shi uses the basin in a rather nonchalant manner, not befitting the gravity of the situation or his preceding behavior.

Directly after we see Little Fu in the fray for the basin, we‘re given the bag with the fake one.

Zhao Guangyi also guesses that we had the chamber pot to distract from the real basin being taken, which is true, just not to our knowledge (if I understand the plot correctly? Still have my doubts about this one, but I don‘t want to watch a recap without having finished all Kaifeng quests.)

Big Zhao doesn‘t seem to have known that Yingying isn‘t really Granny‘s daughter based on his reaction to Granny talking about her son and Yingying telling him where the son is supposed to be stationed. I was wondering if those two were also working together, but it doesn‘t seem like it. (I didn‘t have a better place to put this point into.)

The quest’s theme and solution: in the letter in the brocade bag left with the waiter, Yingying writes that „With trust, something can be made from nothing.“ She knows that the solution is to create currency that only represents value and requires the people‘s trust.

The close-up of the Universal Furnace and a poem about the suffering of the people going unheard under luxury at the end of the „real Kaifeng“ cutscene. Great in-your-face conclusion to the reveal of the quest‘s topic and the place where the luxury (the song coins) are being hoarded/the end boss is

Things that aren’t foreshadowing but I still noted:

Why does Old Jin make a gesture like he‘s insinuating a blow job when he mentions that we have been running errands for other people in these parts? Is that just me who sees it??

We‘re too nice to Old Jin. He blackmailed us into hiring him!!

Is it important that someone from Velvet Shade bought our Parting Tears? I really can‘t tell.

I really like the chinese VA for the male MC. I played the main quest with the english voices to more easily keep up with the plot and the main ones were pretty good (MC‘s sometimes reminded me of Laios lol), but it was full of misplaced lines and AI-voiced NPCs (for whatever reason, I‘m guessing to test global before they invest in it, but they fucking suck). But I‘m really enjoying the chinese voices.

The entrance cutscene is so cool. And the fact that it‘s apparently inspired by a real art piece!!

Yingying and the triplets have associations with animals, I wonder if there‘s one with Granny Turtle, too? And why cats are for wealth? Chinese people, please offer me your insights?

Really cool to be able to recognize locations in the cutscenes. I wish we could replay them, otherwise it feels like the animators‘/storywriters‘ effort is going to waste. It doesn‘t hit as hard as it could if we can only see them once!! Though I heard that that‘s a features on the cn servers, so maybe we‘ll get it soon

I think Murong Yuan is in the cutscene where the real Kaifeng is shown?? The part with the mechanical bird, and the clothes look like hers. Why??

Yingying knows Aunt Han and Big Zhao recognized Uncle Jiang‘s moves so really you‘d expect that we‘d make more progress than we actually do (especially since Star Stealer shares a surname with the dude that sent Uncle Jiang the letter we find in the beginning of the game, though that doesn‘t say much since same surname in english doesn‘t mean same in the chinese original text. Buuuut potential lead. Shame that we asked her to only look for Aunt Han)

Who the hell is the boatsman that ferries us to Kaifeng and Revelry Hall? I don‘t get it

Yingying so enjoys having the velvet shade women pamper her. Do you smell that? There‘s something queer in the air.

Zheng E is there as the Master of Grain and looks like himself (white hair and stuff), but is introduced as Shen Yilun. But he‘s supposedly impersonating Shen Yilun, who doesn‘t look like that at all, according to both his character profile and his appearance in the quest leading up to Zheng E‘s boss fight. So? What‘s up with that?

It must‘ve been a lot of fun for Yingying in her disguise to watch us, also in a disguise.

Why do we think Wen Wuque is referencing Parting Tears when he watches us being interrogated? I really don’t know

The story Granny Turtle tells us about the person that fell asleep in a coffin, is that a metaphor by the writers about how Nine Mortal Ways/the underground offers ways to survive when legal means won’t let you? That‘s how I interpret the ghosts throwing spirit money at her and the Nine Mortal Ways smuggling in Tang Coins, but I‘m not sure.

I‘m only half-way through the playthrough, but I‘ll stop here for now. Maybe I‘ll add the rest in a reblog, if there‘s anything really interesting or a new aspect.
