"What?" she sputtered quite indelicately, green eyes growing huge in disbelief.
"You heard me," her mentor grumbled. "Step into the shoes of a full-fledged kami, will you?" The goddess of strength and healing took a swig from her beloved jug of sake. "You've been running around humans long enough, learning whatever you wanted to learn. It's about time you stepped up to what I trained you for."
Short pink hair that had escaped from her bun framed her face in a disarray; irritated, she blew some offending locks away from her eyes. Lips as equally pink has her strange hair opened and closed sporadically, making her resemble one of the koi in her shishou's outdoor pond.
"You can't be serious," she mumbled, fists clenching. "I'm only twenty, it's too early and I have so much left to learn——"
"You've already inherited your position," the blonde woman before her shot back. "You don't quite have an age anymore, y'know. You're going to appear twenty forever." A smirk appeared on the older woman's lips. "Take that as an advantage."
"Sakura," the gentle woman who was Tsunade's familiar touched her shoulder with a concerned hand. "The council wants you to take on a familiar——it's high time. The world has waited——"
"——'centuries for my rebirth', I know," the pink-haired girl responded with a grimace. She shifted uncomfortably in her leaf-colored yukata, a finger absentmindedly going to the purple diamond on her forehead——the one that marked her as Tsunade's successor as the goddess of healing, while the tiny gold leaf at the nape of her neck glowed dimly, symbolizing her status as the new Haru-no-kami, goddess of spring, and the title by which she was now known by amongst her fellows.
"People have been praying to you for as long as they existed here in Kyoto," Shizune reminded her, a firm expression on her face. "And you were chosen as the one to be reborn, and attain your rightful position for the years to come——"
Once again, Sakura interrupted her. "I know," she emphasized wearily. "It's just that the council could have given me more time in getting to know the very people who worship Haru-no-kami." Despite holding a strong sense of duty and pride in her position, the girl still hated how she had to act as though she was above humans——when in fact it was their prayers that kept the whole lot of gods, including the conservative council, alive.
She sighed, and rose, deciding that she had had enough. "All right," she muttered in defeat, while Tsunade let out an intoxicated whoop and her familiar beamed at Sakura. "I'll get a familiar."
Before she exited the house, however, Sakura paused at the screen door with a smirk. "But," she added, green eyes sparkling with cleverness and a sparkling mischief, "on one condition."
The sakura trees outside trembled with some unknown force, before bursting into bloom despite it being the middle of autumn. Tsunade wore a wry smile, golden eyes filled with triumph, while Shizune's face began to pale, mouth opening immediately to chastise her, correct her, prevent her from setting her mind on defying the council by giving them exactly what they wanted——
"I'm going to choose my familiar myself."
