Everyone experiences panic attacks differently.
This is not about me being incapable to relate to what people experience if it’s not 100% what I experience, I leave this lack of sympathetic feeling to another type of people. This is about writing a panic attack in a way that feels realistic while at the same time being literary regardless of what symptoms the author decided to use to describe the character’s experience. Both symptoms and causes of the attacks were extremely realistic but that is not enough, otherwise, the DSM wouldn’t be a manual but a narrative. At the same time, this is an author that makes middle schooler behave and talk like 20+ people and it feels like too much of her way of reasoning as a therapist gets in the way of her writing. I mean have you ever seen pre-teens setting things calmly after taking long, deep breaths and being reasonable about things? I remember how it was to be in middle school and boi it was not Like That.
