Waterfall at Lungshan Temple 龍山寺
For me, it was quite a shock to my system to plunge straight into a very busy place after staying in the country for so long. I would like to think I better appreciate the slower pace of life in the country but I do miss the convenience of the city. Tourist crowds have been something I have come to dislike, unfortunately, I myself am a tourist here in Taipei. The Lungshan Temple is Taipei's most well known temple and it shows. There are droves of tourists here. A lot of them are tour groups from various countries as well. I think I have forgotten my dread of the Chinese tour group but I think this has refreshed my memory.

Exploring the Lungshan Temple 龍山寺
The Lungshan Temple in Taipei oozes with ancient Buddhist charm in the middle of modern Taipei. The current structure was rebuilt after the second world war so it isn't really that old however, looking at it you might be forgiven if you thought you were transported back in time. Truly it does feel like I was back exploring Mainland China which has countless of these ancient Buddhist temples. These days, it is a major tourist attraction but this has not stopped the local faithful from coming to visit. It is probably tricky navigating your way through the droves of tourists which descend upon this temple. Already there was a busload of Japanese school children being guided through the temple. Additionally, it was also raining so everyone started moving inside.

Inside the Lungshan Temple 龍山寺
Although it wasn't my first time visiting Taipei or Taiwan for that matter, I don't really remember much about the city. My impression of the city before coming here was that it is an ultra-modern city not unlike Tokyo. Although, it does have modern conveniences such as the metro system, much of Taipei is actually not that modern. In fact, the pace of Taipei is much slower than one might get in Hong Kong or Singapore. Part of this is due the the fact that the people are still very traditional and they hold on to these values well into the modern age. The Lungshan Temple is one of these examples and it is actually a living and breathing temple.

Lungshan Temple 龍山寺
Lungshan Temple is one of the most well known Buddhist and Taoist temples in Taipei. I would like to think that having been built in 1738, it would be the oldest template in Taipei. While it is certainly one of the oldest around, the temple has been built and rebuilt multiple times over time. The causes of damage to the temple were either natural through earthquakes or man-made through World War II. Despite all that the temple has been through, the people of Taipei have consistently rebuilt the temple. So while it is certainly one of the oldest temples around, most of it is no longer the original structure.

Going to Lungshan Temple 龍山寺
I finally checked in and my first meal in the city of Taipei. It was a point at the food type of place and it has been ages since I have last been to a place like there. The food at these kinds of places tend to be mediocre though, but that it not to say it was bad. I know that Taiwan is known for their snacks and street food, I was hoping to be able to try out this street food while I am here. However, that would have to wait until that evening. I was hoping to make the most of the day here in Taipei. It was winter time in Taipei and people were all wearing winter clothes. I think I have gotten used to the cold that I didn't feel chilly at all. At least it is not that warm however, it was still good enough for shorts.
