31 Days of Horror Movies
Day 23 | Lunopolis (2011)
Okay, so this isn’t technically a horror movie but bear with me.
So, this is one of those movies that I saw on a list somewhere that was like “movies about to leave Netflix” and I thought it seemed like it would be interesting! Well, it’s found-footage style--like many popular horror movies we’ve talked about already--so that bodes well! It is a low-budget movie (so, yeah, some of the effects aren’t great, though some of them are very good given the circumstances!) and it was straight-to-video but it’s a good sci-fi movie that involves people living on the Moon, time-travel, conspiracies, and a creepy moon-worshiping cult that resembles Scientology quite a bit if you ask me. And honestly, the cult members had a few times where they were pretty scary. They looked a lot like Men in Black and they try pretty hard to scare and intimidate the “filmmakers” in the movie.
I really didn’t know what to expect from the movie but I was pleasantly surprised to say the least!
LUNOPOLIS
I first heard about towers on the moon in my pre-teen years, listening to Art Bell’s Coast to Coast with guest Richard Hoagland. So, when I heard about a movie based on an expansion of the inhabited moon theory, I was pretty damn excited. Lunopolis was actually very interesting and, despite holes in some of the theoretical physics at the film’s core, I would definitely recommend checking it out. Acting was solid - especially from David Potter. The story centers around the discovery of a massive secret regarding the moon, and a very strange religious group that will stop at nothing to keep that secret under wraps. I think Hoagland would be proud of this film.
