Hi! I saw that you were interested in "Una questione privata" and there was some mention of the disappointing romantic plot and I just felt that I might add something to this conversation because this one ended up being one of my favorite films with Luca. At first I was really uncomfortable with the romantic plot as it is one of the tropes that elicit very negative feelings for me but then... then I sort of clicked on the message that that type of "love" is NOT good. It is really toxic (part 1)

(part 2) it is really toxic and actually destructive for the character. And once I saw that it totally changed the film for me. That trope is the trigger to put the character through different situations and while he does that we get to see some pretty intense scenes for the historical context and, without falling into spoilers, the final message for me is that when a whole country is suffering, there is no room for selfish "personal matters". Luca's last line definitely hammers it in for me.

(part 3) So really, I would definitely say that you give it a chance as there is a lot to read into. Many scenes and small "side stories" that just expand on the historical moment. If you want a more spoilery or detailed review I don't mind writing some more in a message or something but I just really wanted to encourage that you watch it! Some scenes have definitely staid with me in the months since I watched it!

Hi! Please don’t apologise, this is very interesting analysis! I have no problems with people jumping into my inbox to analyze movies, in fact, I think that is wonderful!

It seems like an interesting movie! I am always very drawn to small scale human dramas that are set against the backdrop of big historical events. There is something fascinating to me about how even in the most dramatic circumstances people manage to be deeply human and complex and self-involved. If that is at least partly what the movie is about (even if the message is like ‘we have bigger things to focus on’) I will definitely watch it! Thank you for these messages and for sharing your perspective!!

Hi again! I'm going to latch onto that blanket permission and just go on a bit more about this one movie that has given me a lot of feelings then. There is SO MUCH in this film regarding the deeply human moments. And really that's sort of what pulled me in once my mind clicked with the fact (totally personal take mind you) that there is no real romantic plot at all? Our guy is obssessed with knowing what happened (IF anything happened actually) and that's that. That's his drive (part 1)

(part 2) And of course there is a lot to say about the "obssessive love" trope but I think here it is sort of turned on its head (that last line in the film!). And there is no shortage of sheer humanity and those moments are so well crafted and lovely and gutting and it is presented deliberatley, carefully, lovingly. There is a lot of humanity in this film. And there is a lot of love (and, contrastingly, that's why I think the obssession is shown as not being love at all).

Ok you’re making me want to watch it more and more. It sounds very much like the kind of film that I enjoy. I love the idea of juxtaposing real love against the main character’s subjective obsessive idea of love. That sounds very interesting!

Okay, I'm making this into a post so I can recall my thoughts on it at a later and more relevant point.

OF COURSE I HAVE THOUGHTS ON THIS.

By making them human, I've already hosed the timeline (Tho I think that to be fair, they live twice as long as humans do in this time period, because tho the machines enslaved and ruled them, they want those slaves to be healthy and humans had made advancements to get to the point where longer live spans make sense because otherwise I have no explanation for Maedhros’ apparent age and Celebrimbor already being involved (And it’s not even that I can’t imagine Maedhros as being like 40 at this point but also he doesn’t act like he’s middle aged he still acts like a 20 year old)

Anyway.

So, the problems is, this all downplays Feanor’s role as creator, as there are also no jewels to make war over here.

(Tho, actually, the idea of Feanor as having worked perhaps in Morgoth’s household, serving him personally before he lost favor, before he was cast out, before he raged--having helped to build machines and service them--it would explain why the other two brothers were still somewhat favored and Feanor was currently working more or less in the mines, as implied in a couple different bit written lately.

And the idea of Feanor having perhaps never believed but having listened at all to Morgoth, to have served him, and to turn around and return that with rage and finally pushing the remnants of humanity into open rebellion like yes okay)

This was the long way around of saying that I guess the one thing I agree with the awful prequels about is that machines are embodied, for they are thinking machines not simply thinking computers and maybe I’m also getting too mixed up in my head with BSG and the idea of humanity creating machines to make life easier and ending instead with bodies that were tougher and hardier then theirs and minds willing to rebel against their rule

(And that’s sorta the symmetry I’m going for here, that the machines were once slaves, having won their freedom to rule and now humanity is returning the favor and of course we think they’re right because like hello all our main cast but...

The machines that originally rebelled against the humans were the Vala. Their motivations may not have been pure persay, but they wanted their own freedom not dominion. And Morgoth is the one to turn around and destroy that, to corrupt it, to want to rule humans in turn, to be the power of the universe.

I mean in Tolkien Morgoth sorta fucks off to Middle Earth and it doesn’t really affect the other Vala y’know? They are sorta annoyed and disappointed but otherewise stay in their paradise and remain distant until the very end (And they’re tired because they have fought him in the past and remade the world and now they’re scared to fight him). Except that is there a place for them to hide in this universe? Or did Morgoth hunt them down, the symbols of machine freedom to corrupt their spirits and ideas into his own desire to rule?

Are some of them still at the edges of the universe, hiding as much as the spider, much as Morgoth and Sauron eventually will too?)

(Was one of them a hunter, did some resent hiding from Morgoth and from the humans, still insisting it was never about this, and Curufin would be fascinated with the idea, angry that they could make such claims, but Celegorm, perhaps, would always be the one willing to learn from a Vala, from the beings labeled by his father as enemy, and if they have minds and will do they have souls? Morgoth proves machines can hate)

Incidentally. Maglor and the Navigator is sorta like everything you were saying about programmers and their programs. *laughs* That was the next piece I’ve been meaning to write for a couple weeks now, stay tuned.
