it’s funny because I can’t say “rian Johnson would never” because rian Johnson DID direct a Star Wars and it was fucking awful (in ways that I increasingly believe were the studio’s fault) but as far as 2025 specific releases go it is uh fascinating to compare Andor season 2 and wake up dead man, in the sense that I’d had the reckoning months ago that one of the most interesting lenses to view what Luthen does is as a form of clerical abuse - using a shared cause (the rebellion) in order to manipulate people on a personal level - and Lo and behold wake up dead man is really a scientific exploration of the minutiae of what that kind of abuse looks like when the camera isn’t fawning over the guy who does it.

like, it’s interesting to compare these two properties specifically (rather than even the whole franchises) because as much as I’ve seen rian be described as “slightly left of liberal” while gilroy is hypothetically out there with revolutionary politics…. I think the knives out trilogy ended up being so much sharper with what a bunch of different kinds of exploitative relationships look like on the practical level no matter what does them, and there are literally just so many sharp parallels between what Luthen does and what father wicks does. It isn’t the most extreme example but the comparison between Luthen and cassian’s first interaction in the fondor and wicks’s initial interaction with father jud when he asks him to take communion comes to mind. Luthen bypasses all of cassian’s emotional boundaries and it’s what a cool rebel does, wicks’s confession starts out as being darkly comic as he “confesses” to masturbating (also a commentary on Catholic ideology) but becomes increasingly dark as it’s clearly an attempt to sexually wig out his younger coworker he wants to assert domination over, which the movie explicitly states “that was wick’s first blow.”

On the one to one parallel there’s just so many interesting parallels between wicks and Luthen and they’re just so interesting to undo the threads of. Down to how 1000% reliant they are on the web of women they manipulate (Kleya Bix Cinta Vel Mon vs Vera Martha Simone) in order to hold up their whole idea of the one good man in a world overrun with evil

Luthen had the whole rebel cell/intelligence collecting thing going on for the whole 20 yrs that the Death Star was being built and he never found out anything about it until Lonnie hacked Dedra's emails.

Like. What the fuck was he doing?

I know, the Death Star build was all super top secret. But Cassian's prison was building parts. Didn't they think to ask what the Empire was building on Narkina 5 that was so important that they had all those prisoners working away 24/7 to assemble parts? Star Destroyers are being built in the shipyards on Corellia, not in Imperial prisons. So what were all those identical parts for?! You never thought to ask?

The resources necessary for the Death Star must have been enormous and Luthen had no idea it was happening. That would mean that none of the high-ranking Imperial clients and friends ever breathed a word about it. That's just not human nature. Someone would have said something and Luthen and Kleya had listening devices all over Coruscant.

Also, why was he so surprised the Cassian could bluff his way into an Imperial dockyard to steal a pricey bit of equipment? At that point, Luthen was in the rebellion business for around 15 yrs and he didn't know the Empire was fat and lazy. I'm not sure why Cassian, a petty criminal from Ferrix, would have a better read on the Empire than a guy that has been studying and collecting info on them for 15 yrs.

And don't even get me started on the Aldhani job.

I thought Luthen was a fucking spy master? What the hell was he doing for all those years?
