Okay, something I couldn't help but notice: Luz keeps looking away when she's feeling upset or worried. She's trying hard to keep the pain on her face being seen. I watched that talk she had with Amity and she only actually looked at her twice. And when she did the first time and noticed Amity looking at her, seemingly upset, she immediately looked away. When she looked a second time, it was when Amity wasn't looking at HER. Even when she's actually telling Amity what's wrong, she avoids eye contact.

okay I've been seeing a lot of posts/discourse on the timeline about Amity being an utter mess around Luz this episode. And well, it’s obvious. But I don’t see anyone talking about how Luz acted towards Amity in this episode.

Okay, first off- here’s Luz having a heart to heart with Willow and Gus, promising that they’ll figure out the whole bullying situation. Amity walks past and Luz lights up right away. She immediately wipes the marker off her face, tosses the banana and races over to her. We’re supposed to think it’s with the intention to ask her for advice about the Boscha situation, but really I don’t think they’ve really interacted much since Grom so Luz is thrilled to see her. To the point that she forgets about her friends and just runs over to her. Luz could’ve called Amity over and talk to them as a group, but she ran after her. That says something I think.

Here. Amity was recounting her backstory as the former team captain of the grudgby team. There was no reason at all for Luz to move closer to her other than the fact that she was completely engrossed with Amity (and not just her tragic backstory). Luz has a wide-eyed, curious look. And this isn’t the first time we’ve seen her look at Amity like this. Like she’s not sure what to make of her.

LUZ WAS TOO BUSY SMILING, LOOKING AT AMITY TO NOTICE THE HUGE AXE IN FRONT OF HER. This resulted in Amity grabbing Luz, stopping her from getting sliced. Amity then summons an abomination arm to get Luz through safely. C’mon! It’s right there!

Luz is visibly upset that Amity is hurt (and Amity injured herself protecting Luz) and she likely feels guilty about it. She’s concerned.

But “normal” concern felt for friends has a limit. There was no need at ALL for Luz to offer carry Amity and then scoop her up even though Amity insisted she was alright. The way I see it- Luz wanted to impress her (for lack of better words). Also, we all know Luz’s love language is “acts of service”. And picking up someone and carrying them all the way to the nurses office (canon, see Dana’s drawing) is a big gesture. Luz could’ve simply helped her up, offered her an arm/shoulder. But she went all in instead. (Willow knows lmao)

Last one. Everyone is happy that Amity’s finally a part of the gang. But note how close Luz and Amity are sitting together, knees pointed towards each other. It means something. 

Luz’s interest in Amity from the onset, despite Amity being mean to her quite a few times, never faded. And ever since Luz befriended Amity we’ve seen less of her being a klutz/dork around Amity as she’s grown more comfortable around her. But the acts of service have continued and escalated to an extent (offering to fight a fear-bringing monster, carrying her to the nurse’s office though she lacks the stamina, etc). Luz offers herself up without a second thought because she cares about Amity and would do anything to help/protect her. She loves her, she just doesn’t know it yet.

Luz is dense

Maybe calling her dense is harsh but honestly... it’s true. 

1) Luz is completely oblivious to Amity’s affection. She really JUST thinks Amity sees her as a close friend. This one’s the most obvious so I’m getting it out of the way.

2) Luz is completely oblivious to HER affection for Amity. This girl has it bad, but she also has NO IDEA. She subconsciously flirts constantly, but she has no idea she has feelings for Amity. She thinks she just wants to be friends.

3) Luz has no idea what her biggest fear will be. When she says it’s Eda not believing in her she thinks that’s true. Despite having anxiety about her mom’s texts all day, she doesn’t realize how much it’s effecting her. It’s easier to just ignore it.

I think this goes well with my last post about Amity’s diary. Amity is a master of self reflection. She knows exactly what’s going on in her own mind, and she realizes she has a crush on Luz almost instantly. This makes some things harder on her because feeling like you know why you are the way you are makes you feel like you can control it. If you can just notice and be rational about things, then you don’t need to feel those big messy emotions... right?

Luz is the opposite. She’s nothing but big messy emotions, but the ones that hurt she ignores. She covers them up with bigger emotions about things that don’t hurt as much. Being dramatic about Eda not believing in her is a lot easier to be hurt about than her own failure at being honest with her mom. So she just forgets that it’s worrying her and focuses on Eda. Obsessing with befriending Amity is a lot easier than admitting she’s attracted to her.

I’m really excited to see how their mindsets play off each other going forward. They have so much they could learn from each other. Amity needs to learn balance, letting her emotions be and not having to have an explanation for everything she feels, she takes herself too seriously. Luz needs to learn to slow down and self reflect.
