The problem--no, a problem, because there has never only been one problem with Lex--has always been that the boy has always been prone to spite. He is bitter, and he is hateful, and though that may only mean that he is Lionel's son, he is also his mother's son, and that is where it falls apart. Where he has Lionel's brilliance, his hunger, he also inherited his mother's softness. What that has done is create a boy so desperate for daddy's attention and love that he uses his considerable ability to act out.

It's pathetic. He is so capable, and he wastes it. Lionel does not hate his son, but he is so terribly disappointed in him.

out of all the gin joints in all the world... she can almost hear that smug, little gotcha behind the obvious rhetorical question he directs her way. & she shouldn't be surprised to find him here. it's not lex that doesn't belong among the crowd of dubious rich & famous people she's here to survey, it's the college girl currently trying to pass for twenty-one, getting herself a drink so she can blend in & observe. otherwise, it's not that she finds herself desperate for a taste of the upper class – cigars, booze & stock market talk are not exactly chloe sullivan's idea of a good time. besides, she's seriously starting to buy the rich laugh theory – it's distinct. a little like the sound of an old, broken slot machine & she's having a hard time controlling the judgement on her face. ergo, a glass to hide behind would be much appreciated !
