Lycée français de Pondichery
my latest~
[The Lycée] seems the only place for [Julian] in his position. I feel sorry for him, though. I couldn't stand ugly people even when I was five. Lots of the ugly ones are foreign, aren't they?
John Lennon, circa 1966.
(Source: The Beatles: Paperback Writer - 40 Years of Classic Writing, edited by Mike Evans.)
Here, John refers to sending the three-year-old Julian Lennon to Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle, more often referred to as the Lycée. This was a French co-educational primary and secondary independent day school located on Cromwell Road, London.
Interestingly enough, Larry Kane reports this conversation from 1965 which contradicts what John said above (in Kane’s book, Lennon Revealed):
KANE: What can you give him [Julian]?
JOHN: Just love... He’s just going to grow up happy and know he’s wanted. I’m not having any of that boarding school or sending him away. He’s going to be with us all the time.
