CHEAP 44 LYDERICA
combined with the @teenwolffemslashcollection bingo slot "summer road trip" (also posted on ao3)
They were cheap. Not even a dollar each. Gaudy and ugly and brightly colored. Just the usual tacky post card picked up at some tourist trap wherever they stopped. Beach towns, hiking resorts, amusement parks they wheedled Derek into buying tickets for. What was the point of a summer road trip without souvenirs, right? Or rubbing it in your friends’ faces you were somewhere pretty and they weren’t.
Still, Erica spent an ungodly amount of time picking each out. Wrote a little message on the back. Left a lipstick kiss in the corner. Dropped it in the mail and resolutely didn’t let herself wonder how Lydia felt getting them, if they were going in the trash or in her bedside table drawer.
She never brought it up when they talked, so Erica figured it was probably the latter, but she still sent them anyway, telling herself if nothing else it would keep Lydia from forgetting her while they were apart. Three months cross country was kind of a long time.
But maybe she wasn’t as subtle about it as she thought.
A single photo, sent out of the blue.
All her postcards, framed around Lydia’s mirror, shaped like a heart.

Written for @teenwolfrarepairevents August Character of the Month and @torturedpoetskywalker prompt: Post-Canon Moving In Together or Going to the same college together
In the past month, Lydia has found her groove at MIT. She's gotten used to the new environment, new objectives, new faces of going to college. Which is why she's taken aback when she walks into the main library one day and spots a familiar blonde.
“Erica?”
Erica looks up from her laptop. “Oh, Lydia! Hi.”
“I didn't know you went to MIT.”
“Yeah, computing,” Erica replies shyly.
Lydia cocks her head and remembers Erica hacking into her father's insurance records many years ago. She smiles. “It's nice to see you.”
“You too.”
Over the next few months the two girls run into each other more and more. It starts off as knowing smiles across the library —
(“Who's that?” Lydia's friends ask.
“Just someone from home.”)
— and nods in the corridor —
(“Lydia, thank God!” Erica exhales. “Do you know where this building is?”)
— but slowly they morph from old classmates to friends. It surprises Erica to begin with. After all, she used to hate Lydia and people like her. The popular kids who made her life hell. But Erica's changed a lot since freshman year of high school and so has Lydia. Away from the terrors of Beacon Hills High and the horrors of Beacon Hills supernatural scene, Erica finds it easy to like Lydia.
They start spending more time together, studying and helping each other on assignments and going to coffee shops and parks and stores.
It's so nice, Erica thinks, to talk to someone who knows what it means to be supernatural.
(“So what actually is a banshee?” Erica asks one night.
Lydia explains and Erica nods in half understanding.
“Now ask me what a chimera is,” Lydia laughs.
“Oh I missed a lot after I left, huh?”)
It's so nice, Erica thinks, to talk to someone who remembers the time Stiles snorted chocolate milk out of his nose.
(“Did anyone ever tell you about the first time he got drunk?”
Erica's eyes go wide. “No? Tell me immediately!”)
So they become friends. They hang out in each others’ rooms. Lydia encourages Erica to try climbing again. Erica helps Lydia run for student council —
(“We don't need badges.”
“That's where you're wrong, Lydia!”)
— They talk about their fears, their nightmares, their hopes and dreams. They have inside jokes —
(“Oh!” A mutual friend they’re studying with turns to Erica. “Can you make it to the party on Saturday?”
“Maybe,” Erica replies, glancing over at Lydia.
“No, mayflies,” Lydia mutters without looking up from her textbook.
Erica giggles and looks back at their friend. “Sorry, what time did you say it starts?”)
— They click.
And then one day, Erica walks into Lydia's room and throws herself down onto Lydia's bed. “God! I hate my roommate.”
Lydia, at her desk, is undisturbed by the dramatics. “You should come live here,” She says offhandedly.
“What?”
“My roommate's dropping out, going back to Poland. You should move in.”
“Okay.”
So they live together.
They live together.
All the little things about Lydia that Erica had been ignoring become unignorable. Like the way Lydia's hair always smells like strawberries or the way Lydia laughs like an angel or the way Lydia is somehow both incredibly competitive and incredibly bad at Mario Kart.
That last one becomes especially unignorable late one night when they're sitting on Erica's bed playing together. Lydia is losing, of course, so she decides that if she can't win herself the only option is to sabotage Erica. She attempts to grab the controller out of Erica's hands but can't quite reach. After two more tries, Lydia just decides to launch herself at the other girl. This works to knock the controller away. It also, however, means Lydia is now lying on top of Erica on Erica's bed.
“Hi,” Erica says.
“Hi,” Lydia replies.
Erica can feel herself blushing.
“Fuck it,” Lydia mutters and closes the gap between their lips.
Erica kisses back fiercely.
Much later, they're curled up in each other's arms, the Mario Kart all but forgotten.
