Hello everyone!
Today, I come to tell you about a series quite different from those that I have been able to present to you so far and which was broadcast on the Freeform from 2017 to 2021. It is called The Bold Type and is now watchable on Prime Video.
A quick summary to start: The series follows the stories of three friends - Jane, Kat and Sutton - as they go through difficulties in their professional and personal lives. Our three protagonists in their twenties all work at Scarlet Magazine in different departments. The first, Jane Sloan, is a newly promoted writer who wants to make her voice heard. For her part, Kat Edison was also newly promoted and now works as Director of Social Media. As for Sutton Brady, she is currently an executive assistant, but she has bigger dreams for her life. Everyone has plans for their lives but our choices rarely turn out as we planned...
And a little technical presentation:
- Created by: Sarah Watson
- Music by: Lyle Workman
- Main cast: Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee, Meghann Fahy, Melora Hardin, Nikohl Boosheri, Sam Page, Matt Ward.
I have so much to say about this series that I don't really know where to start. Maybe with what for me is the most important aspect of this series and that this series addresses real-life topics. It starts from the first minutes of the series where we see these three young and fierce women trying to achieve their dreams. They struggle to find their place on the professional scene yet refuse to ever back down. Each of our three protagonists, under the supervision of their boss Jacqueline Carlyle -played by the fantastic Melora Hardin- strives to overcome the trials they face and emerge victorious and stronger each and every time.
More than that, the series delivers important messages about our society. Sutton played by Meghann Fahy, Jane -played by Katie Stevens, and Kat -played by Aisha Dee, all broadcast diverse messages and the fact that they sometimes do not agree on certain issues helps us to focus our reflexion on precisely these points. This is also what friendship is about, not always agreeing but knowing how to dialogue on points of disagreement. They experience different trials that each of us could face at some point in our lives. Whether it is the place social networks hold in our lives but also their dangers, self-confidence, questioning one's sexual orientation, family relationships, political commitment, freedom of expression and religion, emigration, diseases such as breast cancer or the testimonies of rape survivors, the series addresses it all. I can only warmly recommend that you watch it whatever your tastes in series if these are subjects that are meaningful to you.
They dare to tackle those subjects in depth while some other shows would barely mention them and even fewer would devote entire episodes to them. Their approach is always thoughtful and sensitive without getting into stereotypes and that's refreshing.
Plus, these three bright, vivacious young women embody one of my favorite traits in TV shows, movies, books, etc. : friendship. No matter what they face in their personal lives, their friends' struggles always come first and they constantly try to help each other out. Friendship is such an important thing in life and no one should ever feel isolated or left out as it is one of the most common sources of depression in our society. We should all have at least one person we know we can count on no matter what. And that's why I love this series and these girls so much. You can really feel the love between the actors when you see them and it's truly beautiful.
Cohesion within the team - whether in a fictional world such as within the journalistic team or in real life with the actors and production - is also a very important aspect of this series. Yes, the three main actresses are always there for each other. They manage to survive their ordeals and, fortunately for them, they always have other people to support them in times of need. I mentioned Jacqueline Carlyle above but there is also Richard - Sutton's boyfriend, Adena - a friend of Kat’s, Alex - a colleague of the three girls, and Ryan - Jane's boyfriend, and who are always ready to come and save the girls by giving them help and advice. And I find it very important to show that our supporters, the people closest to us are not necessarily the people we would have thought of at first and not necessarily people from our family. Even though there may be tension or disagreement at some point, the key notion is always support and help and I believe that it is a really important message to convey in our modern society because more people need to take action to help others and not always do selfish things.
Some of you might think that with all these serious topics covered, the series is probably dull and dramatic and sure, some aspects are dramatic due to the themes that are covered but it is also one of the most funniest shows I've ever seen. Some situations are really specific to the characters and can provoke both laughter and tears. The personalities of the three main girls especially being quite different from one another create sometimes discrepancies and misunderstandings that make situations sometimes unexpectedly funny and/or sad.
Last stop before I leave you : the playlist. I often say that a soundtrack creates half the atmosphere of a show or a film. And I'm not going to spend too long trying to describe the different atmospheres that it highlights throughout the show and I'm just going to let the tracks speak for themselves: The Bold Type Music. I will just point out that the soundtrack really lives up to the quality of the series, the acting and the themes covered and that the work of Lyle Workman is truly breathtaking. It highlights the main emotions of each scene and enhances the entire story. So just for that, thank you. And thank you also for the many musical discoveries.
With all this, I think I can leave you. I sincerely hope I managed to make you want to watch it. As always, I'm open to discussion if you'd like.
See you soon,
Eli.
