Lylie was jerked to a stop midstep when a shem grabbed her sleeve. A blond boy in expensive blue silks was frowning at her. He said, “Hey, who did you steal these from, slave? You’re not allowed to have these.”
Lylie jerked her arm and broke his grasp. “These are mine, you stupid shem!” She hit him in the face with a wallop of force magic.
The boy was stunned for a second, but then looked almost impressed. “Oh, so you’re a laetans.” He paused and then tackled her. “Bitch!”
Lylie didn’t take it lying down and then two of them scuffled in the dirt until they rolled into the tiniest patch of mud Lylie had ever seen. The shem boy froze, as if under the effects of some powerful spell. Though she was confused, Lylie stood and dusted herself. When the shem still didn’t move, she spit on the ground next to him and stormed off back to her family.
